BJP Sweeps Most Cities in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena and Congress Win Key Towns

Mumbai, Jan 2026 : The results of the municipal elections across 28 civic bodies in Maharashtra, excluding Mumbai, have highlighted a decisive verdict for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while revealing pockets of influence for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Congress, NCP factions, and regional parties. The BJP emerged as the dominant force in urban Maharashtra, securing clear majorities in several municipal corporations and becoming the single-largest party in many others. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena managed to retain control in strategic strongholds such as Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli, demonstrating its continued influence in its home turf.

Other parties, including the Congress, various factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), AIMIM, and local parties, won in selected pockets, resulting in a mixed verdict. However, the overall picture shows BJP’s substantial dominance across urban Maharashtra, signaling strong public support for the party’s civic governance strategies and its organizational reach in cities.

In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the 115-member municipal corporation witnessed the BJP emerge as the single-largest party, winning 58 seats. AIMIM followed with 33 seats, reflecting its growing base in the city. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena secured 12 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) managed six and four seats, respectively. Navi Mumbai saw the BJP, led by Minister Ganesh Naik, achieve a clear majority in the 111-member corporation, winning 66 seats. In Akola, BJP topped the 80-member corporation with 36 seats, followed by Congress with 21. Shiv Sena (UBT) secured seven seats, VBA five, and NCP-SP, NCP, and Shinde-led Shiv Sena two seats each. Nashik saw BJP secure a clear majority with 72 of 122 seats, while Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 26 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) 15, NCP four, and Congress three. Pimpri-Chinchwad witnessed BJP’s convincing victory with 84 of 128 seats. NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) finished second with 37, Shinde-led Shiv Sena six, and one Independent was elected.

In Pune, the BJP achieved a landmark victory in the 165-member municipal corporation, winning 123 seats. NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) secured 21 seats, Congress 16, Sharad Pawar-led NCP three, while both Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT) won one seat each. The results in Pune signify BJP’s growing dominance in Maharashtra’s urban heartland.

In Ulhasnagar, BJP narrowly edged past ally Shinde-led Shiv Sena, winning 37 seats to Sena’s 36. In Thane, a Shinde stronghold, the Shiv Sena retained 50 of 131 seats, while BJP won 30 and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) around 11.

Chandrapur marked a setback for BJP, reduced to 23 of 66 seats, while Congress emerged as the single-largest party with 32, and Shiv Sena (UBT) six. In Parbhani, Shiv Sena (UBT) won 25 of 65 seats; Congress and BJP secured 12 each, and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) 11.

Latur gave Congress a clear majority in the 70-member corporation with 43 seats; VBA won four, BJP 22, and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) one. In Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Congress led with 30 of 90 seats, BJP won 22, and Shinde-led Shiv Sena and NCP 12 each. Malegaon saw local party ISLAM win 35 of 84 seats, AIMIM 21, Shinde-led Shiv Sena 18, and Congress three. Panvel and Mira-Bhayandar were dominated by BJP, which secured 55 of 78 seats and 78 of 95 seats, respectively.

Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad saw BJP emerge as the single-largest party with 39 of 78 seats, Congress 18. Jalgaon followed a similar trend with BJP winning 46 of 75 seats, Shinde-led Shiv Sena 22, and Shiv Sena (UBT) five.

In Ahilyanagar, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) became the single-largest party with 27 of 68 seats, allied with BJP (25 seats). Shinde-led Shiv Sena secured 10, Congress two, and Shiv Sena (UBT) one. Dhule saw BJP achieve a clear majority with 50 of 74 seats, AIMIM 10, NCP eight, and Shinde-led Shiv Sena five.

Jalna, a newly formed 65-member corporation, was won by BJP with 41 seats, Shinde-led Shiv Sena 12, and Congress nine. The newly formed Ichalkaranji municipal corporation gave BJP a clear majority with 43 of 65 seats, while a local opposition front secured 17.
