NORAD Aircraft to Deploy to Greenland Amid Planned Arctic Defence Activities

NORAD Aircraft to Deploy to Greenland Amid Planned Arctic Defence Activities

Ottawa, Jan 2026 : The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) has announced that its aircraft will soon arrive at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland as part of a series of long-planned operational activities aimed at strengthening the defence of North America. The deployment forms part of routine NORAD exercises and reflects sustained coordination among allied nations with strategic interests in the Arctic region.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, NORAD said the aircraft would operate alongside other air and support assets already deployed from bases in the continental United States and Canada. The command emphasised that the activities are built on the long-standing defence cooperation between the United States and Canada, in partnership with the Kingdom of Denmark, which oversees Greenland’s defence and foreign affairs.

NORAD clarified that the operations have been fully coordinated with Denmark and that all participating forces are operating with the necessary diplomatic clearances. The government of Greenland has also been formally informed of the planned activities, underscoring transparency and cooperation with local authorities.

According to NORAD, such deployments are part of its regular mandate to conduct sustained and dispersed operations to defend North America. These operations typically span one or more of NORAD’s three primary regions—Alaska, Canada, and the continental United States—depending on operational requirements and strategic assessments.

Canadian media reports have indicated that a contingent of the Royal Canadian Air Force is already participating in the NORAD exercise in Greenland. Reports further suggest that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is considering the deployment of additional Canadian forces to support Danish-led sovereignty exercises on the Arctic island. These exercises are expected to focus on safeguarding critical infrastructure and reinforcing regional security amid increasing geopolitical interest in the Arctic.

The NORAD deployment comes against a backdrop of heightened international tension surrounding Greenland. Several European countries have hardened their positions following growing condemnation across the continent over statements made by US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland. Trump has recently threatened the imposition of tariffs on eight European countries as part of his renewed push to assert greater US control over the strategically located island.

Over the weekend, Trump said the United States would impose a 10 per cent tariff starting February 1 on goods imported from eight European countries that oppose his ambition related to Greenland. He further warned that the tariff rate could rise to 25 per cent from June 1 and remain in force until an agreement is reached for what he described as the “complete and total purchase” of Greenland.

These remarks have triggered calls across Europe for a firm and coordinated response, with several leaders urging the European Union to prepare a full range of countermeasures. As geopolitical competition intensifies in the Arctic, the latest NORAD activities underline the growing strategic importance of the region and the emphasis placed by allied nations on preparedness, cooperation, and regional stability.
