Transport Department steps up enforcement during National Road Safety Month; strict action against violators

Challans issued for helmet, seat belt and overspeeding violations; awareness programmes also underway

Helmet-related challans highest in Agra Zone; seat belt-related challans highest in Kanpur Zone

Lucknow, January 2026 : Under National Road Safety Month 2026, the Transport Department is running an extensive statewide campaign to help reduce road accidents and create awareness among the public about traffic rules.

As part of this drive, action is being taken across the state against those violating road safety norms from 01 January to 31 January. Along with enforcement, the department is also promoting safe road behaviour through awareness programmes and various outreach activities.

The main objective of the campaign is to bring down road accidents and encourage citizens to strictly follow traffic rules.

National Road Safety Month 2026 is being observed across Uttar Pradesh, with the Transport Department and other concerned departments organising a range of road safety awareness programmes.

According to Transport Commissioner Kinjal Singh, extensive enforcement action has been carried out across the state since 01 January under various road safety-related campaigns. During this period, a total of 49,500 challans were issued for not wearing helmets, while 11,740 challans were issued for seat belt violations.

Similarly, action was taken in 15,180 cases of overspeeding, and 4,164 challans were issued for using mobile phones while driving. In addition, challans were issued in 304 cases of drink and drive, and 5,546 cases of wrong-side driving.

From 08 January to 14 January, a special drive was conducted on the Transport Commissioner’s instructions against helmet violations on two-wheelers, seat belt violations in four-wheelers, and mobile phone use while driving. This was carried out along with the “No Helmet, No Fuel” initiative. During this period, 34,200 challans were issued for not wearing helmets, 9,108 challans for seat belt violations, and 3,033 challans for mobile phone use while driving. Agra Zone recorded the highest number of helmet-related challans at 5,411, while Kanpur Zone recorded the highest number of seat belt-related challans at 1,752.

From 15 January to 21 January, the third week of the campaign focused mainly on action against unfit school vehicles and illegal parking. During this period, 18,379 school vehicles were inspected. Challans were issued for overloading in 351 vehicles and for not meeting prescribed standards in 570 vehicles. Fitness certificates of 75 school vehicles were cancelled for non-compliance. Action against illegal parking resulted in 2,617 challans across the state.

In the final phase of the campaign, holding areas have been identified to park vehicles removed from main roads from 22 January to 31 January 2026. So far, 109 holding areas have been identified across various districts. Along with this, continuous action is being taken against vehicles unnecessarily parked along national and state highways to help prevent road accidents.

Awareness programmes are also being organised to promote compliance with road safety norms. The Transport Department’s action is a significant step towards encouraging safer traffic practices across the state.
