New Delhi, Aug 2026: The Aadhaar app has crossed the significant milestone of 5 crore downloads, highlighting the growing preference among residents for accessing Aadhaar-related services through convenient digital platforms, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on Thursday.
The milestone underlines the expanding role of the Aadhaar app as a digital interface between residents and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The application enables Aadhaar holders to access several important services directly through their smartphones, reducing the need to visit Aadhaar centres.
Among the services available through the app are mobile number updates, address changes, email updates, biometric lock and unlock facilities and downloading of e-Aadhaar.
The app has recorded sustained usage since its launch. More than 60 lakh mobile number updates have been completed through the platform, while users have carried out over 15 lakh address updates and more than 23 lakh email updates using the application.
The Ministry said the increasing use of these facilities reflects a broader shift towards digital-first delivery of Aadhaar services. Residents can complete several routine updates remotely, making the process more convenient and accessible.
The Aadhaar app has been designed around the principle of “Show, Share and Verify”, which seeks to give Aadhaar holders greater control over their personal information while facilitating secure and convenient identity verification.
Alongside the expansion of the app, UIDAI is also strengthening the ecosystem for secure offline Aadhaar verification. According to the Ministry, more than 200 entities have now been onboarded as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs) since the initiative was rolled out in January.
The onboarding of these organisations is aimed at expanding secure, consent-based and paperless identity verification using Aadhaar's offline mechanisms. It is expected to benefit both service providers and residents by reducing dependence on physical documents and simplifying verification procedures.
Under the offline verification framework, authorised entities can use mechanisms such as QR-code-based verification and secure digitally signed Aadhaar documents to verify identity information without requiring real-time access to UIDAI's central database.
The system is designed to strengthen privacy by enabling Aadhaar holders to share only the information that is necessary for a particular service. This resident-centric approach seeks to ensure that digital identity verification remains both convenient and controlled by the individual.
The Ministry said the growing participation of OVSE partners reflects increasing confidence in Aadhaar-enabled digital verification systems that combine privacy safeguards with ease of access.
The latest developments are part of the government's broader Digital India vision, which seeks to use technology to improve the delivery of public services and make them more accessible to citizens.
With the Aadhaar app crossing 5 crore downloads and the offline verification ecosystem expanding rapidly, UIDAI's digital services are increasingly becoming an important channel for residents seeking secure, paperless and technology-enabled identity services.
