New Delhi, Oct 2026 : The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to several companies, including Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Nestle Health Science, Tirupati Wellness, Amazon, Flipkart and Netmeds, over allegedly misleading claims related to products marketed for protein support and maintenance of lean muscle mass.
The food safety regulator said on Thursday that the companies have been asked to explain why regulatory action should not be initiated against them over the claims made in connection with their products.
In a post on Instagram, FSSAI said the products carried claims relating to high protein content, maintenance of lean muscle mass, muscle strength, immunity support and energy metabolism. The regulator said such claims were displayed on product packaging in a manner that could potentially create a misleading impression among consumers about the health benefits associated with the products.
FSSAI said it had taken action against Dr Reddy’s and Nestle Health Science Limited for non-compliant advertising and misleading claims. It also named Nex International and Shreyash Retail Pvt. Ltd. in connection with allegations relating to the sale of unsafe food and expired or rotten food products, respectively.
The notices seek detailed explanations from the concerned companies regarding the nature of the claims and how they were presented to consumers. The companies will have an opportunity to respond to the regulator before any further action is considered.
The latest action comes amid increased scrutiny by FSSAI of food products carrying health, nutrition and wellness-related claims. The regulator has been stressing the need for accurate labelling and advertising so that consumers are not given exaggerated or misleading impressions about the benefits of food products.
FSSAI reiterated that it remains committed to ensuring the availability of safe and wholesome food while protecting consumer interests. It said stringent action would be taken against violations of food safety requirements.
The notices do not by themselves establish liability or guilt on the part of the companies. Further regulatory action, if any, will depend on the explanations and responses submitted by the concerned entities to FSSAI.
The development highlights the growing regulatory focus on protein supplements and other products promoted on the basis of specific health and nutritional benefits, particularly as consumers increasingly rely on packaging and online product descriptions while making purchasing decisions.
