Guwahati, Sept 2026 : India will look to clinch the three-match ODI series against the West Indies when the two sides meet in the second match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. India lead the series 1-0 after an eight-wicket victory in the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram.
The venue will offer India plenty of positive memories. The hosts have won both their previous ODIs at Barsapara, with Virat Kohli scoring centuries in both matches. Rohit Sharma has also enjoyed success at the ground, having registered a century and a half-century in his appearances there.
The conditions could once again favour the batters. All four ODI innings previously played at the venue have produced scores above 300, raising the prospect of another high-scoring contest.
India's batting was at its best in the series opener. Kohli produced an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls, while captain Shubman Gill scored 110 off 108 deliveries. Rohit also made a positive contribution with 32 off 35 balls. Kohli's century also took him beyond the landmark of 15,000 ODI runs, making him only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the milestone.
The West Indies, despite losing the match, showed considerable batting strength. John Campbell scored 62 off 60 balls, while Justin Greaves registered his maiden ODI century with 101 off 108 deliveries. The visitors raced to 135 without loss after 19 overs before India's bowlers managed to regain control.
Kuldeep Yadav proved particularly effective, claiming four wickets for 40 runs and triggering the West Indies' middle-order collapse. Prasidh Krishna also played a role as India restricted the visitors to 295 before chasing down the target comfortably.
However, India's other bowling options came under pressure. Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 45 runs, while debutant Naman Dhir gave away 33 runs in his five overs. Gurnoor Brar finished wicketless after conceding 60 runs in his 10-over spell.
With the series at stake, attention will therefore be on India's team combination. The management could consider changes to the bowling attack, with Mohammed Siraj and Auqib Nabi among the players who did not feature in the opening game. There could also be an opportunity for wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, while Yashasvi Jaiswal remains another option within the squad. The announced ODI squad includes all three players.
For the West Indies, captain Shai Hope and his teammates will look to build on their strong start with the bat while finding ways to contain India's experienced top order.
