Jairam Ramesh Criticises FIR Against Rahul Gandhi After SIR Protest

New Delhi, Oct 2026 : Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday criticised the registration of an FIR against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders following their protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the action was aimed at suppressing the party’s campaign against what it calls “vote chori”.

In a post on X, Ramesh said Rahul Gandhi had been “relentlessly exposing” what he described as a conspiracy involving the alleged manipulation of electoral rolls.

“For almost two years now, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been relentlessly exposing, through factual evidence, the Vote Chori conspiracy hatched between the PM & the HM on one side and the CEC on the other,” Ramesh said.

He alleged that “crores of genuine voters” had lost their constitutional right to vote because of what he described as the “atrocious process of SIR”.

Ramesh further criticised the Delhi Police for registering an FIR after Rahul Gandhi adopted what he described as the method of Satyagraha to highlight the Congress’ objections to the electoral-roll revision exercise.

“And when the LOP-LS adopts the method of satyagraha to highlight the injustices of SIR, the Delhi Police registers an FIR against him and other leaders,” he said.

Ramesh also accused the BJP-led government and the Election Commission leadership of being concerned by the Opposition’s campaign.

“The diabolical duo is nervous, rattled and desperate. The writing on the wall is clear,” he said.

His remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were booked along with other Opposition leaders in connection with their entry into the Akashwani Bhawan premises during an Opposition protest in New Delhi.

The police case followed a march by INDIA bloc MPs and other Opposition leaders from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters. The protesters were stopped near Akashwani Bhawan after they were prevented from proceeding further towards the poll panel’s office.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders subsequently remained at the premises for several hours and staged a sit-in. They demanded action on alleged irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process and sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to reports, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among the leaders who entered the premises through the reception gate after the march was stopped. The protesters later gathered under a tree and continued their demonstration.

Police personnel asked the leaders and protesters to vacate the area, but the Opposition leaders continued their sit-in as part of their protest against the SIR exercise.

The Gandhi siblings and other INDIA bloc leaders were subsequently detained by the Delhi Police and later released.

The Congress has maintained that the electoral-roll revision process could affect the voting rights of genuine electors, while the Election Commission has defended the exercise as part of the process of updating and verifying electoral rolls.

The latest confrontation has added to the ongoing political dispute between the Congress-led Opposition and the Election Commission over the SIR exercise, with the Congress continuing to demand greater transparency and accountability in the revision of electoral rolls.
