Galle, Aug 2026 : India vice-captain KL Rahul was forced to retire hurt after battling severe muscle cramps during the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday. Rahul, who had scored a patient 77 off 162 deliveries, was unable to continue after experiencing intense spasms across his hands, wrist and legs.
Rahul had resumed his innings after the tea break alongside Devdutt Padikkal, who was unbeaten on 85. The right-hander had already required medical attention before the interval after complaining of discomfort in his right forearm during the 51st over. Despite the issue, Rahul initially appeared ready to continue his important innings.
However, shortly before the start of the final session, the 34-year-old signalled to the umpires that his condition had deteriorated. He struggled to grip his bat properly as severe contractions developed in his left hand and wrist. The cramps soon spread to his legs, leaving him visibly distressed and struggling to walk.
Rahul eventually had to leave the field with assistance from the Indian team physio. Television footage later showed the batter having difficulty climbing the stairs to the dressing room, with team physio Kamlesh Jain supporting him as he made his way inside for further treatment.
His retirement brought an unfortunate interruption to what had been an outstanding partnership with Padikkal. The Karnataka duo had added 150 runs for the second wicket, putting India firmly in control after the early dismissal of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Rahul played the role of the anchor, negotiating the challenging conditions in Galle with patience and discipline. His 77 included nine boundaries and a six, while his 162-ball stay provided India with a solid platform against the Sri Lankan bowling attack.
Following Rahul's departure, India captain Shubman Gill walked out to join Padikkal at the crease. The visitors were comfortably placed at 197/1 after 53 overs, having recovered strongly from the early setback.
Rahul's innings marked his 21st half-century in Test cricket and once again highlighted his ability to absorb pressure and bat for long periods. However, his sudden departure has raised concerns over his fitness and availability for the remainder of India's innings.
The Indian team management is expected to monitor Rahul's condition closely before deciding whether he will be able to return to the crease later in the innings.
