Kolkata Metro Railways Observes 80th Independence Day.

Kolkata; August 2026: Kolkata Metro Railway has observed the 80th Independence Day today (Saturday – 15th August 2026). In the main programme, Mr. Prem Sagar Gupta, General Manager, Metro Railway hoisted the National Flag at Metro Rail Bhavan and inspected the parade of Metro RPF this morning.

In his address, General Manager spoke about the achievements of Metro Railway in various sectors. He has informed that Metro network will increase to 130 Kilometres in few years. In his speech, Mr. Gupta has also highlighted the excellent performance of Metro Railway in recent times. Metro has carried 23.60 crore passengers in 2025-26. During the current financial year 2026-27 (up to July, 2026), Metro Railway has earned Rs. 166 crores which is 34% higher than the previous year (2025)'s figure.

Moreover, the General Manager has also asserted that more and more Metro commuters have been using the digital payment mode which is helping them to purchase their tokens, Smart Cards, QR Code Based Tickets as well as recharge Smart Cards very easily by downloading ‘Aamar Kolkata Metro’ App from Google Play Store and App Store. Metro Railway authorities are working very hard for further improving safety, passenger amenities and reliability standards, General Manager added.

A cultural programme was also organised to mark the occasion at Metro Rail Bhavan. Metro officials also hoisted the National Flag at different Metro stations. Metro officials also conducted Swachhata Abhiyan and special tree plantation drive at Metro Railway Quarters Complexes at Belgachia, Dum Dum and Tollygunge as part of 80th Independence Day celebrations.
