Niamey; August 2026: Algeria has made a military donation to Niger, transferring two Mi-24V (Super Hind) attack helicopters and two Mi-171 tactical transport and logistics support helicopters, along with ammunition and spare parts, from the Algerian base in Guezzam to Niamey airport. The shipment was delivered aboard a C-130 military transport aircraft. This transfer allows Niamey to bolster its air and combat capabilities at a critical time.
The choice of aircraft reflects a deep understanding of the nature of asymmetric warfare in Niger, a country located on Algeria's southern border. Mi-24V attack helicopters provide close air support and high destructive capacity against armed groups in desert and rugged terrain, while Mi-171s form the backbone for troop transport, supply operations, and medical evacuations across vast areas. This air support compensates for the severe shortages that followed the withdrawal of Western forces and gives the Nigerien army a real ability to regain the initiative in maneuver and surveillance over the Sahel, where it had previously relied primarily on Turkish armed drones, such as the Bayraktar TB-2 .
This donation comes in a highly complex regional and security context. On the diplomatic front, it confirms the return of Algerian-Nigerian relations to normal after the previous tensions of 2025 and reflects Algeria's desire to address border crises through sustainable security cooperation that also protects joint economic projects, such as the trans-Saharan gas pipeline and highway.
In terms of security, Niger is experiencing a dangerous escalation. Armed groups have modified their tactics, shifting from rural ambushes to attacks on military and economic centers in the capital. The most notable example was the complex suicide attack targeting Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101 in June 2026, which left dozens dead. Air bases also suffer recurring attacks, highlighting the urgent need for the air cover provided by these helicopters.
The Algerian donation also represents a strategic message through which Algeria demonstrates its preference for building a security environment based on regional cooperation, free from external interference, by enabling the Nigerien army to regain its air sovereignty. The greatest challenge for Niamey remains the optimal use of these air platforms to tip the balance of the conflict and stem the bleeding of insecurity that threatens the stability of this nation located in the heart of the Sahel.
