Prashant Kishor to Take Oath as First Jan Suraaj MLA in Bihar Assembly

Patna, Aug 2026 : Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor is set to take oath as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Monday, formally beginning his tenure as an elected legislator following his victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election.

The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 am in the office of Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar in the main Assembly building. According to a communication issued by the Deputy Secretary of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Kishor has been asked to appear at the designated time to take the oath or make the prescribed affirmation.

Kishor created political history by becoming the first elected MLA of the Jan Suraaj Party, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in the Bankipur by-election. The victory marked Kishor’s first electoral success since entering electoral politics and represented a significant breakthrough for the relatively new political outfit.

Polling for the Bankipur constituency was held on July 30, with counting conducted on August 3. Kishor maintained a lead through the counting process and eventually won by 19,324 votes.

He secured 64,151 votes, while BJP’s Neeraj Kumar Sinha polled 44,827 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,273 votes.

The result assumed greater significance because Bankipur has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the BJP, which had maintained control of the constituency since 1995. Kishor’s victory therefore represented a major political upset and demonstrated the emerging challenge posed by the Jan Suraaj Party.

With his oath-taking, Kishor will formally enter the Bihar Assembly as the party’s first legislator, giving Jan Suraaj its first institutional presence in the state legislature.

The Bankipur by-election victory is being closely watched in Bihar, particularly because of Kishor’s transition from political strategist and campaign consultant to an elected politician. His entry into the Assembly is expected to provide him with a direct platform to raise issues concerning governance, development, employment and public welfare.

For the Jan Suraaj Party, Kishor’s victory represents an important early milestone as it seeks to establish itself as a political alternative in Bihar.
