Sunil Bansal Retained as Telangana BJP In-Charge, Abhay Patil and Rekha Sharma Named Co-In-Charges

BJP national president Nitin Nabin finalises organisational team for Telangana; Bansal will also continue to oversee West Bengal

Hyderabad, Sept 2026 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retained Sunil Bansal as its in-charge for Telangana and appointed Abhay Patil and Rekha Sharma as co-in-charges, finalising the party’s organisational structure in the state ahead of upcoming political and organisational activities.

The appointments were announced by BJP national president Nitin Nabin as part of a wider organisational exercise covering states and Union Territories. The changes took immediate effect. Bansal has also been retained as the party’s in-charge for West Bengal, giving him responsibility for both states.

Bansal has been associated with the BJP’s organisational work in Telangana for several years. He was appointed state in-charge in 2022 and subsequently oversaw the party’s organisational and electoral activities during the 2023 Telangana Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP won eight of Telangana’s 17 Lok Sabha seats in 2024.

Abhay Patil, a BJP MLA from Karnataka, has also been involved in the Telangana organisation and will continue as co-in-charge. Rekha Sharma, former chairperson of the National Commission for Women and a Rajya Sabha member, has now been appointed as the second co-in-charge.

The new arrangement also brings greater clarity to the division of responsibilities within the Telangana unit. Patil had earlier been given an expanded role in Telangana, while Bansal continued to oversee the state organisation. The latest appointments establish Bansal as the principal in-charge, with Patil and Sharma assisting him.

The BJP’s organisational restructuring comes as the party prepares to strengthen its grassroots network in Telangana. The new team is expected to coordinate organisational activities, cadre mobilisation and preparations for upcoming local-body elections, while also working on the party’s longer-term strategy for the state.

Bansal will simultaneously continue to oversee BJP affairs in West Bengal. The party has appointed Lal Singh Arya, Rajendra Singh and Pinky Kushwaha as co-in-charges in the eastern state. His continuation there comes after the BJP’s strong performance in the recent West Bengal Assembly election and the organisational work undertaken by the party in the state.

Bansal is regarded within the BJP as an experienced organisational strategist, having worked extensively on booth-level mobilisation, cadre development and election management in several states. His experience in Telangana and West Bengal was among the factors that made his continuation significant in the latest reshuffle.

The BJP has also made several other organisational appointments as part of the nationwide exercise. Baijayant Jay Panda has been appointed Maharashtra in-charge, while Vinod Tawde has been assigned Uttar Pradesh. Ram Madhav will handle Tamil Nadu, with Nirmal Kumar Surana and D.K. Aruna as co-in-charges. In Andhra Pradesh, Arvind Bhadoria has been appointed in-charge, with Vanathi Srinivasan as co-in-charge. Tarun Chugh will continue as Gujarat in-charge, while Smriti Irani has been given responsibility for Haryana and Chhattisgarh.

For Telangana, the continuation of Bansal is particularly significant as the party seeks to consolidate its organisational expansion beyond the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has been working to increase its presence at the grassroots level and strengthen its network across constituencies.

The appointment of Sharma also adds a new dimension to the state’s organisational structure, with the former National Commission for Women chairperson bringing experience from national-level public and organisational roles. Patil’s continuation provides institutional continuity, while Bansal remains responsible for overall coordination.

The BJP’s Telangana leadership has welcomed the appointments and indicated that the new team will work with the state leadership to strengthen the organisation across the state.

With Bansal continuing as Telangana in-charge and Patil and Sharma assisting him, the BJP has now formalised its organisational command in the state. The team will also have to coordinate with the state unit on grassroots mobilisation, organisational expansion and preparations for the party’s future electoral contests.
