Chennai, Aug 2026 : Signs of unease have emerged within the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu over a campaign projecting Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay as a potential candidate for the post of Prime Minister, according to party sources.
The issue has reportedly caused discomfort among sections of the Congress leadership, which is concerned that posters, videos and social media content portraying Vijay as a contender for the country’s top political office could create confusion about the alliance’s broader political positioning.
According to sources, the campaign is largely being driven by a section of TVK supporters who are keen to highlight the Chief Minister’s growing popularity. However, Congress leaders are said to be worried that such a projection could undermine their planned national messaging, particularly regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The issue first gained attention after TVK legislators and Ministers repeatedly praised Vijay during proceedings of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The campaign subsequently expanded outside the legislature, with posters portraying the Chief Minister as a future prime ministerial candidate appearing at various locations.
Videos and promotional reels supporting Vijay’s national ambitions have also reportedly circulated in northern India, a politically significant development for Congress as it seeks to maintain its position as the principal opposition force against the BJP.
The controversy received further attention following a television channel survey that reportedly placed Vijay third among potential prime ministerial choices, with nine per cent support, behind Rahul Gandhi. The survey appears to have intensified concerns within Congress, with party leaders questioning the timing of Vijay’s projection, particularly since the TVK-Congress alliance came to power in Tamil Nadu only months ago.
The issue is also viewed in the context of recent remarks by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore, who criticised Ministers for displaying what he described as a “fan mentality” around the Chief Minister.
Congress MP Jothimani, meanwhile, described the projection of Vijay as a political strategy but maintained that Rahul Gandhi remained the strongest leader to take on and defeat the Narendra Modi-led government.
The Congress had reportedly hoped to establish Rahul Gandhi as the alliance’s national political face while using Vijay’s popularity and mass appeal to strengthen the coalition’s prospects, particularly across southern India.
However, the competing projection of Vijay has complicated that strategy and raised questions over how the alliance will define its national messaging.
Speaking about the controversy in Madurai on Saturday, State Minister Nirmal Kumar said people across the country had aspirations for Vijay. He added that the Chief Minister would take decisions depending on the political circumstances and maintained that there was no need to discuss the issue at the present stage.
The developments have highlighted the delicate balance within the TVK-Congress alliance. While Vijay’s popularity could prove electorally valuable, his projection as a national leader could potentially clash with Congress’s ambitions for Rahul Gandhi.
The emerging debate is therefore likely to remain a sensitive issue as the alliance works to maintain political cohesion while simultaneously defining its leadership priorities and strategy for future elections.
