“Assam in Distress: Floods Leave 52 Dead, Thousands Homeless – A Cry for Help”

The flood situation in Assam has worsened over the last 24 hours, resulting in 52 deaths and leaving thousands homeless. Over 2.4 million people have been affected, with 30 out of 35 districts severely impacted by the second wave of floods.

For the past month, Assam has faced severe flooding, causing loss of lives, extensive damage to infrastructure, destruction of crops, and the displacement of thousands. Ali, a resident of Barpeta district, has been forced to live in a relief camp after his house was destroyed by the floodwaters. Initially, Ali and his family sought refuge in another villager’s house, but it too was submerged. Ali has appealed to the government for help, highlighting that around 500 families in the Rowmari Pathar area have lost their lands due to constant erosion and annual floods.

Barpeta district has been hit hard by river erosion and floods, affecting approximately 140,000 people and submerging 179 villages. Dhubri is another heavily impacted district, with over 775,000 individuals affected and widespread crop damage reported. The Brahmaputra River’s water level remains above the danger mark at several locations, and government officials are actively involved in managing the crisis.

The Assam Chief Minister, Governor, Union Minister, and state ministers have visited the affected areas to assess the situation and provide assistance. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire services, has been deployed for rescue operations across the state.
