US Tightens Naval Blockade on Iran, Warns of Economic Pressure and Military Escalation

Washington, April 2026 : The United States on Friday said its expanding naval blockade of Iran was intensifying rapidly, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warning that Tehran now faces a stark choice between reaching a nuclear agreement or enduring mounting economic and military pressure.

Speaking at the Pentagon, Hegseth said “Operation Epic Fury” had achieved swift and decisive outcomes within weeks, contrasting it with prolonged military engagements of the past. He reiterated Washington’s central objective: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“The mission remains clear — Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” he said, while describing the blockade as “ironclad” and increasingly global in scope.

According to US officials, the Navy is actively enforcing restrictions across key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Hegseth claimed that vessels suspected of violating sanctions or aiding Iran’s trade were being turned back. “Every ship to and from Iranian ports is being scrutinised,” he said, adding that only a limited number of non-Iranian vessels had been permitted safe passage so far.

He also confirmed that US naval presence in the region would be further strengthened, with an additional aircraft carrier expected to join operations in the coming days.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine, underscored that American forces had already demonstrated their willingness to act decisively. He detailed a recent maritime interception in which a large container ship ignored repeated warnings.

“After exhausting all other options, disabling fire was authorised,” Caine said, noting that US forces targeted the vessel’s engine room before deploying Marines to board and secure it. The ship and its crew are now in US custody, he added.

The Pentagon further confirmed that several sanctioned Iranian oil shipments had been intercepted globally, including in the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. Officials indicated that such operations would continue as part of broader efforts to curb Iran’s oil exports and economic lifelines.

Hegseth said the blockade was expanding beyond regional waters, asserting that no vessel could transit strategic routes without US oversight. He accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps of destabilising the region through attacks on commercial shipping and the use of naval mines.

Warning of a firm military response, he said US forces had been authorised to take lethal action against Iranian boats involved in laying mines. “If mines are placed in the water, we will act immediately,” he stated.

The Defence Secretary also called on US allies, particularly in Europe, to contribute more actively to securing global shipping lanes. “The time for free riding is over,” he said, emphasising that both Europe and Asia rely heavily on energy supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Referring to President Donald Trump, Hegseth said Washington remained open to negotiations but only if Iran made verifiable commitments to abandon its nuclear ambitions. At the same time, he stressed that the US was under no pressure to rush into a deal.

General Caine added that American forces remain fully prepared for escalation if required, noting that the situation remains fluid.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where disruptions to critical oil routes could have far-reaching implications for global energy markets and trade.
