Gaikwad’s Gritty 74, Overton’s Late Blitz Lift CSK to 158/7 Against GT*
Chennai, April 2026: Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with a determined unbeaten 74 as Chennai Super Kings posted a fighting 158/7 in 20 overs against Gujarat Titans in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
Asked to bat first, CSK endured a shaky start as Gujarat’s pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada made full use of the conditions. Siraj began with a probing opening spell, while Rabada struck early, removing Sanju Samson for 11 after the batter briefly threatened with attacking strokes.
The top-order collapse worsened when Impact Substitute Sarfaraz Khan was dismissed for a first-ball duck, followed by debutant Urvil Patel, leaving CSK struggling at 28/3 by the end of the Power-play—one of their lowest starts this season.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, Gaikwad found it difficult to accelerate as Gujarat’s disciplined bowling attack tightened its grip. Spinner Manav Suthar compounded CSK’s troubles by removing Dewald Brevis, reducing the hosts to 38/4.
The middle overs saw a dramatic slowdown, with CSK crawling to their 50 only in the 12th over—their slowest team fifty of the season. However, Gaikwad gradually rebuilt the innings alongside Shivam Dube, who provided some momentum with a few well-timed boundaries and a six.
The partnership offered hope before Dube was bowled by Arshad Khan for 22, just as he looked set to accelerate. Gaikwad, meanwhile, brought up a patient half-century off 49 balls—the slowest fifty of IPL 2026—reflecting the challenging batting surface at Chepauk.
In the death overs, CSK finally found some rhythm. Jamie Overton provided a crucial late surge, smashing 18 runs off just six deliveries to give the innings a much-needed boost.
Rabada returned to finish with impressive figures of 3/25, leading Gujarat’s bowling effort, while Arshad Khan chipped in with two wickets to maintain pressure throughout the innings. Despite the steady fall of wickets, Gaikwad anchored the innings brilliantly, finishing unbeaten on 74 off 60 balls and adding valuable runs in the final over with a flurry of boundaries.
CSK’s innings turned out to be a tale of resilience. After a disastrous start, the hosts managed to recover through Gaikwad’s composure and late hitting from the lower order, pushing the total to a competitive score on a pitch that clearly favoured the bowlers.
Brief Scores:
Chennai Super Kings 158/7 (20 overs) — Ruturaj Gaikwad 74*, Shivam Dube 22; Kagiso Rabada 3/25, Arshad Khan 2/43 — vs Gujarat Titans.
