GCC Rejects Iran’s Move to Close Strait of Hormuz, Calls for Restoring Maritime Security

Riyadh, April 2026 : The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has firmly rejected what it described as Iran’s “illegal measures” to close the Strait of Hormuz and disrupt maritime navigation, warning that such actions threaten regional stability and global trade.

Speaking after the 19th Consultative Meeting of GCC leaders held in Jeddah, GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said member states strongly opposed any attempt to block or restrict movement through the strategic waterway. He emphasized that the leaders also rejected the imposition of fees or any other restrictions on ships transiting the strait.

Albudaiwi noted that GCC leaders stressed the urgent need to restore security and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, calling for a return to conditions that existed prior to February 28. The waterway remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, handling a significant share of global energy shipments.

During the meeting, leaders also directed the GCC General Secretariat to accelerate progress on key regional infrastructure initiatives. These include joint transport and logistics projects, as well as the long-pending GCC railway network aimed at enhancing connectivity among member states.

In addition, discussions focused on advancing plans for an integrated oil and gas pipeline network and a regional water interconnection project. Leaders also called for further studies on establishing strategic reserves to strengthen energy and resource security across the Gulf region.

Security cooperation featured prominently in the deliberations, with leaders underscoring the need to deepen military integration among member states. They also urged the expedited development of a joint early warning system to counter ballistic missile threats, reflecting growing concerns over regional security risks.

The meeting also reviewed the broader geopolitical situation, particularly the recent escalation involving Iran and its impact on GCC countries and neighboring regions, including Jordan. Leaders reiterated the importance of pursuing diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions and resolve disputes through dialogue.

They emphasized that a sustainable resolution to the crisis must address the security concerns of GCC nations while fostering long-term stability in the region. The leaders called for renewed diplomatic engagement to pave the way for agreements that ensure peace and prevent further conflict.

Recent months have seen heightened tensions in the region following a series of military confrontations and retaliatory actions. The situation escalated further after attempts at negotiations failed to yield a breakthrough, leading to continued instability around the Strait of Hormuz.

Against this backdrop, the GCC’s strong stance reflects growing concern among Gulf nations about the implications of disrupted maritime trade and regional security. The leaders reiterated their commitment to safeguarding international shipping routes and maintaining stability in one of the world’s most strategically vital corridors.
