Modi’s Football Session in Sikkim Draws Praise from FIFA Chief Gianni Infantino
New Delhi, April 2026 : FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Wednesday praised Narendra Modi for his enthusiasm toward sports, after the Prime Minister was seen playing football with children during his recent visit to Sikkim.
The appreciation came after Modi shared images of himself engaging in a friendly football session with youngsters in Gangtok. Describing the experience as refreshing, the Prime Minister posted on social media that there was “nothing like playing some football” with young companions on a pleasant morning. He also termed the interaction an “energising session,” highlighting the joy of connecting with youth through sports.
Infantino, who has consistently advocated for expanding football’s reach across regions like South Asia, reposted the images on Instagram. He remarked that it was “great to see” the Indian Prime Minister playing “the beautiful game,” adding that football has the power to unite people across the world.
Football holds a special place in India’s northeastern states, including Sikkim, where it often rivals cricket in popularity. States such as Mizoram, Manipur, and Meghalaya have long been known for their strong football culture and grassroots participation, making Modi’s interaction particularly significant in promoting sports engagement among youth in the region.
This is not the first instance of Infantino acknowledging Modi’s connection with sports. The two leaders have met on multiple occasions at international platforms, strengthening ties between India and global football institutions. One of their most notable interactions took place during the G-20 Summit 2018 in Argentina, where Infantino presented Modi with a personalised football jersey.
Over the years, such engagements have underscored India’s growing presence in global sporting conversations, while also highlighting the role of leadership in encouraging grassroots participation. Modi’s recent football session in Sikkim, coupled with Infantino’s endorsement, reflects a broader effort to promote sports as a unifying and energising force among young people across the country.
