Director Talankin Arrived At The Festival In Český Těšín With The Found Oscar Statuette.
Český Těšín, Czech; May 2026: Russian Oscar-winning director Pavel Talankin considers the loss of the Oscar statuette for the film Mr. Nobody after colluding with President Vladimir Putin inside a German airport to be a coincidence. He does not believe in conspiracy theories, such as that it was an action by Russian secret services. Talankin told ČTK today in Cieszyn, Poland, where he was attending the “Kino na hranici film festival” as a guest. He has expressed his gratitude to Lufthansa Airlines which has eventually found the statuette and transported it to Prague yesterday (Saturday, 02nd May). Talankin believes that he will return to his homeland one day. But he says that is not possible now. According to him, he would end up in prison.
He won the Oscar for a Czech-Danish documentary describing the ideological indoctrination of Russian schoolchildren. “They didn’t let me on board with the statuette, because the Oscar is heavy”, said the award-winning director. He added that the company’s employees offered to store it in the excess baggage area. “So, where skis or snowboards belong, the Oscar also traveled”, added the teacher from the Russian city of Karabash, who had to leave his homeland and has now been living in the Czech Republic for a year, where he received political asylum.
He believes that one day he will be able to return home. “But at the moment I have no option. That’s why I’m not thinking about it. If I returned to Russia, I would be locked up immediately”, he confided. If the situation changed and Putin’s regime fell, he would like to return. He left his entire family, his mother and siblings in Russia. “They are safe. We are in contact”, he added.
Winning the Oscar surprised him. “When we started the project, we never thought we could make it to the Oscars. Last June, a Czech producer called and said they wanted to try it with the Oscars. He asked me if I could do it. That it would be challenging and that I would travel a lot. I said I could do it. And I keep my word”, he said.
During a security check at New York airport on Wednesday (29th April) Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers did not allow Talankin to carry the statuette on his flight for security reasons. They said the Oscar could be used as a weapon. Because Talankin did not have a carry-on bag in which to put the statuette, he was forced to check the Oscar separately. The statuette stands 34 centimeters tall, weighs 3.9 kilograms, and costs up to $1,000 (21,000 CZK) to make.
Talankin attended a screening of the film and a debate with students in New York. His Oscar-winning documentary, which also involved Czech co-producers, traces the impact of war propaganda in Russian schools at a time when Russia is waging aggression against Ukraine.
Talankin worked as a teacher in the Russian city of Karabash, a town of 10,000 people, at an elementary school. With the beginning of the war in Ukraine, he was tasked with implementing a new wartime educational program, including special lessons and organising propaganda events. He documented everything with a camera and sent the material to the Ministry of Education. The frustrated teacher decided not to turn off the camera and document not only state-ordered activities, but also other events in and outside the school. At the same time, he met American David Borenstein, and together they found a way to get the filmed material out of the country.
This year, the film received the American Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film and the British BAFTA Award for Best Documentary Feature. Czech Television is planning to broadcast it on May 5th at 21:00 Hours on ČT2.
The film was created in collaboration between the Danish production company Made in Copenhagen and the Czech company PINK. The Czech co-producer participated in the audio and video post-production of the film and became a key partner in ensuring the safety of the film’s protagonist.
