Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh Visits Mizoram, Reviews Sericulture and Handloom Sector

Aizawl, May 2026: Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh arrived in Aizawl on a two-day visit and was received at Lengpui Airport by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Sericulture Minister Pu Lalthansanga.

Soon after his arrival, the Union Minister held a meeting with the Chief Minister at the airport lounge, where key issues related to the growth and development of the textile sector in Mizoram were discussed. Following this, he proceeded to Lok Bhavan, where a high-level review meeting was conducted at the Mini Conference Hall in the presence of officials from the Sericulture Department, Cooperation Department, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Department, Eastern Zone Weavers’ Service Centre, and the Development Commissioner for Handlooms.

During the meeting, senior officials, including Cooperation Commissioner and Secretary Pu Udit Prakash Rai and Sericulture Secretary Pi Florence Zotluangpuii, delivered presentations on the theme “Mizoram’s Sericulture Potential at a Glance.” They highlighted the current status of the textile sector in the state and outlined long-term development goals up to 2047. Agriculture Joint Director Pi R. Lalramhluni also presented details of various initiatives and future plans undertaken by her department. Representatives from the Development Commissioner for Handlooms and the Eastern Zone Weavers’ Service Centre further elaborated on their ongoing activities and future strategies through presentations.

Later in the day, the Union Minister visited key handloom and silk production units in the state. He toured Zozia Silk & Handloom in Tlangnuam, a renowned silk weaving unit that has previously received a National Merit Certificate from the Ministry of Textiles. During his visit, he closely observed the processes involved in cocoon production and silk weaving, and discussed ways to enhance productivity and profitability.

He also visited Lapar at Kulikawn, where traditional Mizo textiles are produced using silk. The artisans showcased a variety of designs and informed the Minister that their products have found markets not only within Mizoram but also internationally. The Minister interacted with the workers, appreciated their craftsmanship, and reviewed the support being extended by both the Central and State governments.

Senior officials accompanying the Minister included Siva Kumar, Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board (CSB-CMERTI), Vrunda Manohar Desai, Textile Commissioner, Dr. Karthik Neog, Director of CSB-CMERTI, and S. Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Eastern Zone Weavers’ Service Centre.

The visit underscores the Centre’s focus on strengthening Mizoram’s textile and sericulture sectors, aiming to boost local livelihoods and position the state as a key hub for high-quality handloom and silk production.
