SRH Crush PBKS by 33 Runs in High-Scoring Thriller; Klaasen, Connolly Shine
Hyderabad, May 2026 : Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 33 runs in Match 49 of the IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal. A blistering batting display, backed by disciplined bowling and aided by costly fielding lapses from Punjab, helped SRH climb to the top of the points table.
After being put in to bat, SRH once again showcased their aggressive intent. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head laid a strong foundation, attacking from the outset and maintaining a high tempo through the powerplay. Their fearless stroke play put immediate pressure on the PBKS bowling attack, setting the tone for a massive total.
Despite an early breakthrough, SRH never lost momentum. The middle overs proved decisive as PBKS faltered in the field. Ishan Kishan, who was dropped multiple times and even survived a missed stumping, capitalised fully on his luck. He crafted a fluent 55, rotating strike effectively while dispatching loose deliveries to the boundary.
Heinrich Klaasen also made Punjab pay for their mistakes. Dropped early in his innings, Klaasen played a commanding knock of 69, combining power with precision. His ability to accelerate in the latter stages ensured SRH crossed the 200-run mark comfortably. Late contributions further boosted the total to an imposing 235/4 in 20 overs.
Punjab’s fielding woes proved a turning point, as missed opportunities against both Kishan and Klaasen allowed SRH to take complete control of the contest.
Chasing a daunting target, PBKS got off to a disastrous start. SRH’s bowlers struck early, removing both openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh within the first seven balls. Captain Pat Cummins led from the front with sharp tactics, while Nitish Kumar Reddy provided immediate support with a wicket.
Eshan Malinga compounded PBKS’ troubles by dismissing Shreyas Iyer, leaving them struggling despite a brisk scoring rate. At 57/3 in the powerplay, the required rate had already begun to climb steeply.
Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly attempted to revive the innings with a counter-attacking partnership. Stoinis played aggressively, while Connolly anchored the chase with composure. Their efforts briefly lifted Punjab’s hopes, but the mounting required rate kept the pressure firmly on.
Connolly emerged as the standout performer for PBKS, producing a magnificent unbeaten 107. His innings, marked by maturity and controlled aggression, kept Punjab in the contest, but the lack of support from the other end proved costly.
As the equation became increasingly difficult, SRH’s bowlers maintained control, mixing their pace and lengths effectively on a slightly slowing pitch. Regular wickets ensured that PBKS never truly threatened the target.
In the end, Punjab finished at 202/7 in their 20 overs, falling short by 33 runs despite Connolly’s heroics.
With this convincing victory, Sunrisers Hyderabad underlined their credentials as strong title contenders, combining explosive batting with disciplined bowling to deliver a complete performance.
