Iran Denies New Written Exchanges With US Amid Reports of Possible Deal

Tehran, May 2026 : Iran on Wednesday denied reports suggesting that it was close to reaching a new agreement with the United States to end ongoing hostilities, stating that no fresh written messages had been exchanged between the two sides in recent days.

The clarification came amid growing international speculation that Washington and Tehran were nearing a one-page framework agreement aimed at easing tensions and restoring stability in the Gulf region.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency strongly rejected the reports, describing them as “fabricated” and politically motivated. The agency claimed the reports were intended to influence global financial markets and reduce oil prices rather than accurately reflect the state of negotiations.

Citing two unnamed sources, Fars said Iran had not yet responded to the latest message sent by the United States through Pakistan, which has been acting as an intermediary between the two countries.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also confirmed that Tehran was still examining the latest US proposal and had not taken any final decision.

According to the Iranian Students’ News Agency, Baghaei said Iran would communicate its response only after completing a detailed internal assessment of the American proposal.

Diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran have continued indirectly despite heightened regional tensions following months of military confrontation in the Gulf.

Last week, Iran reportedly sent a 14-point counterproposal to the United States through Pakistani channels in response to a nine-point American plan that outlined conditions for ending the conflict and restoring maritime security in the region.

Tehran later acknowledged that it had received a reply from Washington, though officials have remained cautious about the progress of negotiations.

Adding to the scepticism over media reports, Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, criticised a recent report by Axios that claimed the two countries were nearing a deal.

Writing on social media platform X, Rezaei said the report represented “a US wish list rather than reality” and warned that Iran would not negotiate under pressure.

He also cautioned that Tehran would respond strongly to any military provocation or external aggression.

According to the Axios report, the proposed understanding could involve Iran agreeing to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment activities in return for relief from US sanctions. The report also suggested that both sides were discussing measures to ease restrictions on shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

However, major differences reportedly remain over the duration of any uranium enrichment freeze, with proposals ranging from five years to two decades.

Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continued to affect maritime activity. Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported widespread GPS disruptions in the region for the third consecutive day. Several vessels reportedly experienced navigation problems, while marine tracking systems showed unusual location data, including ships appearing to move on land.

The current crisis began after the United States and Israel launched joint strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities on February 28. The attacks reportedly killed several senior Iranian officials and civilians, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US-linked interests in the region, while also tightening control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route.

Although a ceasefire came into effect on April 8, negotiations held between Iranian and US delegations in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 failed to produce an agreement. Following the collapse of those talks, the United States imposed a blockade in the Strait, further escalating tensions in the region.
