Review Meeting Held on Educational Initiatives in Lunglei District and Lungsen Aspirational Block

Lunglei, May 2026: A review meeting was held on Wednesday at the office chamber of Lunglei District Commissioner (Deputy Commissioner) Navneet Mann to assess the various educational initiatives being implemented in Lunglei District and the Lungsen Aspirational Block.

During the meeting, officials reviewed several initiatives jointly undertaken last year by the District Administration and the Education Department and discussed continuing these programmes during the current year as well.

Under the “Be DC for a Day” initiative, selected school students will once again get an opportunity to experience the role of the Deputy Commissioner for one day. The programme is planned to be conducted during May, and 10 students will be selected for participation.

The meeting also reviewed the successful implementation of the ELF Programme during 2025–2026 in collaboration with DISHA Foundation. The programme, which focused on English language learning and online educational training in 10 schools under the Lungsen Aspirational Block, is set to continue this year as well.

For the current session, 15 schools have been proposed for inclusion under the programme. These include 10 schools from Lungsen Block, three schools under Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), one school from Bunghmun Block, and one school from Tlabung Block.

Officials also discussed the continuation of the Back-to-School Programme aimed at identifying school dropouts and helping them resume their education. The initiative also includes the use of a QR Code system through which the public can directly report cases of children discontinuing school. Headmasters will continue efforts to bring such children back into the education system.

The success of the Book-Nest Initiative implemented last year for the Lungsen Aspirational Block was also reviewed during the meeting. Under the initiative, books were collected from Lunglei town and distributed among schools. Positive feedback received from students regarding the usefulness of the books was noted. It was decided that the programme would continue this year, with the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department designated as the nodal department. The initiative is expected to begin in June.

The meeting further discussed the operation of the three Cosmic Classrooms located in Lunglei, Lungsen, and Tlabung. Plans were made to schedule opening hours properly and ensure that as many school children as possible are able to visit these facilities.

Under the Project Period Pride initiative, awareness programmes for adolescent students regarding menstruation and related health issues will continue. The programme aims to help students understand menstruation as a normal biological process and remove social stigma surrounding it. Awareness sessions are planned in three selected schools before the end of June.

Similarly, under the Moneywise initiative, financial literacy programmes aimed at teaching students the proper and effective use of money will also be conducted in three selected schools before June-end.

In addition, a new “40 Days Campaign” is planned this year for selected schools. The campaign is designed to promote awareness among students on health, nutritious food, child safety, and other educational and social issues. Officials expect the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the campaign to be finalised within this month, with implementation likely to begin after the first-term examinations.
