West Bengal: Suvendu Adhikari Elected BJP Legislature Party Leader, Set To Become Bengal CM.

Kolkata; May 2026: The BJP legislature party in West Bengal unanimously chose Suvendu Adhikari as its leader, with the swearing-in ceremony of the new government scheduled tomorrow (May 09th) in the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, thus paving the way for him to become the first BJP Chief Minister in the state.

Adhikari’s name was proposed during the legislature party meeting held in Kolkata and was formally announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the presence of newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders. The development comes after the BJP secured a historic victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending decades of dominance by regional parties in the state. Adhikari, one of the BJP’s key faces in Bengal politics, played a crucial role in the party’s election campaign and organisational strategy across the state. His elevation to the top post is being seen as a significant political moment for the BJP in eastern India.

Party leaders and supporters celebrated the announcement, with BJP workers gathering outside the meeting venue and raising slogans in support of Adhikari and the party leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the event.

A few while ago, Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken off from Guwahati Airport for Kolkata to participate in tomorrow’s gala swearing ceremony.

Team Maverick.
