BCCI Tightens IPL Protocols with Stricter Security and Player Access Rules
Lucknow, May 2026 : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to introduce a stricter set of regulations for Indian Premier League (IPL) players and franchises in a bid to enhance transparency, reinforce security arrangements, and maintain discipline during the tournament. BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the new measures will significantly restrict outside access to players and team environments.
According to Shukla, fans, acquaintances, and unauthorised individuals will no longer be allowed to meet players inside team hotels or on team buses. The regulations are expected to come into effect within the next few days as part of the board’s broader effort to tighten operational protocols across the league.
“New rules are in the works, and, according to the new directives, player access will be regulated. Unauthorised individuals will not be allowed to approach players, whether at the hotel or on the team bus. These rules are expected to be implemented within the next few days to ensure that the transparency of the IPL is maintained completely,” Shukla said.
The latest move comes after the BCCI circulated a comprehensive seven-page advisory to all 10 IPL franchises on Friday, highlighting concerns over security vulnerabilities and warning teams about the possibility of targeted honey-trapping incidents during the tournament.
The board has also made it clear that it will conduct unannounced “surprise checks” to ensure franchises comply with the IPL’s operational guidelines and security framework. Team managements have been instructed to maintain strict monitoring of player movements and visitor access within hotels and restricted zones.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reportedly stated in the directive that no person, irrespective of their relationship with a player or official, would be allowed to enter a team member’s hotel room without prior approval and knowledge of the team manager.
“The BCCI/IPL Operations Team may conduct periodic checks to assess adherence to the directives set forth in this advisory. Team managers are required to maintain records of all approved guest visits and hotel movements,” the communication noted.
The advisory also addressed disciplinary concerns after a recent controversy involving Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, who was reportedly seen vaping inside the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh last month.
Reacting strongly to the incident, the BCCI warned that vaping and the use of electronic cigarettes are prohibited under Indian law and could attract legal consequences in addition to disciplinary action under IPL regulations.
“Instances of vaping within the dressing room and other restricted areas of tournament venues have been brought to the BCCI’s attention. It is pertinent to note that the use of vapes and electronic cigarettes is prohibited under applicable Indian law. Any individual found engaging in such conduct within tournament premises is not only violating BCCI and IPL regulations but may also be committing a cognisable offence,” the directive stated.
Additionally, franchise owners have been instructed not to communicate with players or support staff seated in the dugout during matches. The BCCI believes such restrictions are necessary to preserve professionalism, avoid undue influence during games, and ensure smoother conduct of the tournament.
The new measures underline the board’s growing focus on discipline, security, and integrity as the IPL continues to expand into one of the world’s biggest sporting leagues.
