IPL 2026: RCB Opt to Bowl Against MI in Crucial Raipur Clash
Raipur, May 2026 : Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first against Mumbai Indians in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium on Sunday.
The Raipur venue is serving as RCB’s temporary home ground for the remainder of the IPL season, and the Bengaluru-based franchise entered the contest desperate to halt a slide in form after suffering back-to-back defeats against Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
Those losses pushed RCB down to fourth place in the points table, intensifying the race for playoff qualification. With several teams closing in behind them, the match against Mumbai carried significant importance for Rajat Patidar’s side.
RCB received a timely boost with the return of explosive opener Phil Salt, although concerns remain over their bowling attack. Senior pacer Josh Hazlewood has struggled for rhythm in recent outings, while rain interruptions ahead of the match also affected the team’s preparations and practice sessions.
Despite the recent setbacks, Patidar appeared confident at the toss and stressed the importance of staying focused on the present.
“We will bowl first. Pretty obvious, the surface is good and pretty hard. We will try to get them as early as possible and chase well. It’s a new stadium with good supporters and a great outfield. Everyone is looking forward to the game,” he said.
Patidar also emphasized that the team was not overthinking its recent losses.
“Yes, we had a couple of losses, but it’s important to stay in the present and play on our strengths. We are focusing more on ourselves rather than on other teams,” he added.
RCB retained the same playing XI for the encounter, backing the combination despite recent defeats.
For Mumbai Indians, the game was virtually a must-win encounter. The five-time IPL champions entered the contest placed ninth in the standings and facing the possibility of an early exit if results did not improve quickly.
There had been uncertainty over the availability of stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav after he travelled home for the birth of his daughter. However, the star batter returned to lead the side once again in the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya, who continues to be monitored due to a back injury.
Mumbai’s campaign this season has heavily depended on the performances of senior opener Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton at the top of the order. The middle-order inconsistency has hurt MI repeatedly this year, putting additional pressure on their opening pair.
At the toss, Suryakumar said the side was comfortable batting first on what appeared to be a batting-friendly black-soil surface.
“We are pretty confident to bat first. It’s a big ground and runs on the board always put pressure on the chasing side,” he remarked.
The MI skipper also acknowledged the challenges faced by bowlers in the tournament.
“We have had good discussions around the bowling unit. It’s harsh on the bowlers in this format, but we keep trying to improve and get better every day,” he added.
Historically, Mumbai Indians have enjoyed a dominant record against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, winning 19 of the 35 meetings between the two sides. However, RCB have managed to gain an edge in recent encounters, adding further intrigue to Sunday’s contest.
The atmosphere in Raipur was vibrant as fans from both franchises turned up in large numbers for a match carrying major playoff implications.
