BJP-Led West Bengal Government Allocates Key Portfolios Among Five Ministers in Swift Administrative Restructuring

Kolkata, May 2026 : In a swift move aimed at consolidating governance after the formation of the new BJP-led government in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday finalized the allocation of key ministerial portfolios among five senior ministers during a meeting with party MLAs.

The distribution marks one of the first major administrative decisions of the new government, signaling an effort to establish a functional cabinet structure and ensure immediate operational control across crucial departments.

According to the official announcement, senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has been entrusted with three significant portfolios — Rural Development, Panchayat, and Animal Resources Departments. Ashok Kirtania has been assigned the Food Department, while Khudiram Tudu will oversee the Backward Classes Welfare Department. Agnimitra Paul has been given charge of the Women and Child Welfare Department, and Nisith Pramanik has been allocated the Sports and Youth Welfare Department along with the Development of North Bengal.

The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the allocation was carried out after detailed consultations with legislators and senior party leaders, with a focus on administrative experience, regional representation, and community outreach.

This distribution of responsibilities comes shortly after the formation of the new government in the state, which has moved quickly to establish its administrative framework following a decisive electoral mandate.

Senior leaders assigned major responsibilities

Dilip Ghosh, one of the most prominent figures in the state BJP, brings extensive organizational experience to his new role. A former state BJP president and long-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak, Ghosh has played a key role in expanding the party’s grassroots presence in West Bengal since 2014. He has previously served as a Member of Parliament from Medinipur and is known for his strong influence in party organization.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Ghosh won the Kharagpur Sadar constituency, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Pradip Sarkar by a margin of 30,506 votes, securing a total of 89,885 votes.

Agnimitra Paul, a fashion designer-turned-politician, has been given charge of Women and Child Welfare. She previously served as the president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal and currently holds the position of vice-president in the state party unit. She emerged victorious in the Asansol South constituency in the 2026 elections, defeating TMC candidate Tapas Banerjee by a margin of 40,839 votes. She is also the only woman minister in the current cabinet.

Ashok Kirtania, assigned the Food Department, represents the influential Matua community in North 24 Parganas. He won the Bangaon North seat by defeating TMC candidate Biswajit Das by a margin of 40,670 votes. His inclusion in the cabinet is seen as a strategic move to strengthen outreach among the Matua voter base.

Nisith Pramanik, a young leader with prior experience in the Union government, has been assigned Sports and Youth Welfare along with North Bengal development. Formerly associated with the Trinamool Congress before joining the BJP in 2019, he served as a Union Minister of State under the central government. In the 2026 elections, he won the Mathabhanga (SC) seat by a margin of 57,090 votes.

Khudiram Tudu, representing the tribal-dominated Jangal Mahal region, has been given the Backward Classes Welfare portfolio. He secured victory from the Ranibandh (ST) constituency with 131,145 votes, defeating TMC candidate Tanushree Hansda by 52,269 votes. His appointment is seen as part of the government’s focus on strengthening tribal welfare initiatives.

Political shift and early governance push

The formation of the cabinet follows a major political shift in West Bengal, where Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister by Governor R.N. Ravi in Kolkata on Saturday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers, marking a significant national spotlight on the transition of power in the state.

The BJP secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 206 seats in the 294-member House, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats, marking a dramatic change in the state’s political landscape.

In his first cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Adhikari outlined a series of governance priorities, including the rollout of central welfare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, PM Jan Arogya Yojana, PM Kisan-linked Insurance, PM SHRI, Vishwakarma Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Ujjwala Yojana.

The government also announced administrative reforms aimed at improving transparency and efficiency, including alignment with the Indian Judicial Code, extension of the upper age limit for government jobs by five years, increased participation of IAS officers in central training programs, and stricter compliance with census and data guidelines.

Emphasizing “good governance and transparency,” the Chief Minister assured that all welfare schemes would continue, but with strengthened verification mechanisms to prevent misuse of public funds.

The cabinet also underlined the importance of border security enhancement and expedited land allocation for the Border Security Force (BSF), reflecting security priorities alongside development goals.

As the new government begins its tenure, officials have stated that further departmental reviews and policy rollouts are expected in the coming weeks as part of a broader roadmap for administrative restructuring and development-driven governance in West Bengal.
