Trump Rejects Iran Nuclear Proposal, Says Ceasefire on ‘Life Support’

Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday strongly criticised Iran’s latest nuclear proposal, calling it “a piece of garbage” and insisting that Tehran would never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. Speaking at a White House event focused on maternal healthcare, fertility access and childcare reforms, Trump also described the ongoing ceasefire situation involving Iran as being on “massive life support.”

Addressing reporters in the Oval Office after unveiling a series of domestic healthcare initiatives, Trump dismissed the latest Iranian response in ongoing nuclear negotiations as unacceptable and lacking seriousness.

“It is a stupid proposal,” Trump said, reiterating his administration’s hardline position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The President claimed that Iran had earlier agreed to permit the removal of radioactive material — which he referred to as “nuclear dust” — from damaged enrichment facilities following recent US military strikes. According to Trump, Iranian officials later reversed their stance and declined to formalise the understanding in writing.

“They told me they intended to give us the nuclear dust,” Trump said. “They told me you have to take it out, because we can’t do so. Later, they backed away because they didn’t want to put it on paper.”

Trump maintained that the US policy toward Iran remained straightforward and uncompromising.

“I have a very simple plan: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” he declared. “We are doing a service to the world.”

The President also painted a grim picture of the ceasefire situation, suggesting that the arrangement was extremely fragile and close to collapse.

“I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support,” he remarked. “The doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a one per cent chance of living.’”

Trump went on to praise recent US military operations targeting Iranian infrastructure and military assets, claiming that American strikes had significantly weakened Iran’s defence capabilities.

“The military, look, their Navy is dead,” he said. “They have no Air Force. They have no anti-aircraft.”

Highlighting the precision of the operations, Trump commended US pilots for carrying out what he described as highly risky missions.

“Every single one of those bombs went right down an air chute in a granite mountain and exploded,” he said, referring to strikes on Iranian nuclear-linked facilities.

The remarks came during a White House programme centred on maternal healthcare and fertility reforms ahead of Mother’s Day celebrations. During the event, Trump announced a new initiative under which the Department of Labour would create a supplemental fertility benefits option for employers outside conventional health insurance plans.

“Most healthcare plans do not cover these benefits,” Trump said. “This will be a supplemental option available to those who need it.”

He credited Senator Katie Britt for bringing attention to fertility access concerns after a controversial Alabama court ruling that affected IVF treatment services.

“She said, sir, we have to do something,” Trump recalled. “And I became the father of fertility.”

The administration also launched a new portal, Moms.gov, aimed at providing information related to fertility care, pregnancy resources and childcare assistance.

Trump additionally promoted the administration-backed prescription pricing platform TrumpRx.gov, claiming it had significantly lowered the cost of fertility-related medications.

“One drug commonly used in IVF has gone from $966 to $168,” he said.

Also present at the event was Mehmet Oz, who said the new healthcare initiatives would help improve maternal healthcare outcomes in rural parts of the United States and broaden access to fertility treatments.

During the interaction, Trump also briefly addressed US-China relations and his ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“We are doing great with China,” he said. “I have a great relationship with President Xi.”

On the issue of Taiwan, Trump acknowledged that it remained a recurring topic in discussions with Beijing but expressed confidence that tensions would remain manageable.

“He’ll bring up Taiwan,” Trump said. “I think we will be fine.”
