AIADMK Power Struggle Intensifies Ahead of Tamil Nadu Trust Vote; Speaker Holds Key to Political Balance

Chennai, May 2026 : A sharp internal power struggle has erupted within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) over competing claims of majority support among its MLAs, with rival camps led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior leader S.P. Velumani asserting control over the party’s legislative wing ahead of the crucial trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The dispute has placed Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar at the centre of a deepening political crisis, as his decision on recognising the AIADMK Legislature Party leader and the official chief whip is expected to significantly influence the voting behaviour of the party’s MLAs and, in turn, the fate of the TVK-led government.

Both factions have reportedly submitted separate letters to the Speaker claiming majority support among AIADMK legislators. Political sources further suggest that several MLAs’ signatures appear in both sets of submissions, adding to confusion over which group genuinely commands numerical strength within the party.

Legal and constitutional experts have pointed out that the Speaker’s recognition carries significant implications under the anti-defection law. If the Palaniswami faction is officially recognised, AIADMK MLAs will be bound by the whip issued by that camp, compelling them to vote against the ruling TVK alliance during the confidence motion.

Any deviation from the whip could trigger disqualification proceedings under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. On the other hand, if the Velumani faction is recognised, a substantial section of AIADMK legislators may be able to support the government without immediate risk of disqualification.

Political observers note that the Speaker is not bound by any strict constitutional timeline to resolve the dispute and may choose to delay a decision, citing the ongoing internal conflict within the party. However, he also holds the authority to make an immediate determination based on documentary evidence and legislative strength.

Some political circles have speculated that the AIADMK legislature party could effectively function as two separate groups within the Assembly during the trust vote. However, constitutional experts have clarified that the Speaker does not have the power to formally split a recognised political party inside the House.

They emphasised that only the Election Commission of India has the authority to adjudicate disputes relating to party ownership, recognition, or symbol allocation, while the Speaker’s jurisdiction is limited to recognising the legislature party leadership and whip for Assembly proceedings.

Experts also noted that if at least two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs—estimated at around 32 legislators—align with the Velumani faction, they may seek protection from disqualification under the anti-defection provisions, potentially altering the legislative balance.

With the trust vote approaching, the Speaker’s decision is widely expected to become a decisive factor, not only in determining the immediate stability of the TVK-led government but also in shaping the future organisational structure and political direction of the AIADMK.
