TVK Government Set for Crucial Trust Vote in Tamil Nadu Assembly Amid Political Realignments

Chennai, May 2026 : The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to face a crucial trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, in what is being seen as a decisive test of its legislative strength amid shifting political equations and internal divisions within the opposition AIADMK.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest party by securing 108 seats in the 234-member House. However, the party fell short of the majority mark of 118, leading to a period of political uncertainty over government formation.

Vijay was subsequently sworn in as Chief Minister on Sunday after securing the support of key allies, including the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), enabling the formation of a coalition government.

The effective strength of the ruling party was later reduced to 107 after Vijay resigned from Tiruchy East, one of the two constituencies he had won in the election. Following this, Acting Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar directed the government to prove its majority on the floor of the House by Wednesday.

Accordingly, the Assembly session will convene at 9:30 a.m., during which Chief Minister Vijay is expected to move a motion of confidence seeking the trust of the House.

After a brief debate involving both treasury and opposition members, a formal vote will be conducted to determine whether the government enjoys majority support in the Assembly.

The political balance appears to have tilted further in favour of the TVK-led alliance after more than 30 AIADMK MLAs, led by senior leader C. Ve. Shanmugam, reportedly extended support to the ruling coalition. In another development, Mannargudi MLA Kamaraj, elected on an AMMK ticket, also announced his support for the Vijay government.

However, legal and procedural complications have also emerged. The Madras High Court, while hearing a petition filed by DMK candidate Periyakaruppan, restrained Tiruppathur TVK MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi from participating in the trust vote, adding a new dimension to the political arithmetic.

Despite this setback, the ruling alliance currently claims the support of 119 legislators, including 106 TVK MLAs, five Congress MLAs, and two MLAs each from CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, indicating a narrow but workable majority.

Meanwhile, AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP Inbadurai warned party legislators against defying the official whip, stating that any MLA abstaining, remaining neutral, or voting in favour of the government could face disqualification under anti-defection provisions.

The trust vote will not be conducted through a secret ballot. As per Assembly rules and constitutional provisions, the Speaker may conduct the process either through a voice vote or a division method.

If the government fails to secure a majority, the Governor may recommend its dismissal and initiate the process for President’s Rule under Article 174 of the Constitution, making the outcome of the vote politically critical for the Vijay-led administration.
