Indian Railways Unveils Design of India’s First Bullet Train for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor
New Delhi, May 2026 : Indian Railways on Monday unveiled the design of India’s first bullet train that will operate on the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, marking a significant milestone in the country’s high-speed rail project.
The Ministry of Railways displayed an image of the proposed bullet train design at its office in New Delhi. According to an official statement issued by the ministry, the visual representation of the high-speed train has been installed at Gate Number 4 of the Railway Ministry headquarters.
“A picture of the country’s first proposed bullet train has been displayed at the Ministry of Railways. The picture has been installed at Gate Number 4,” the ministry stated.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, India’s first bullet train project, is one of the country’s largest infrastructure initiatives aimed at transforming long-distance rail travel through advanced high-speed technology.
Earlier this year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that the 508-km-long corridor will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
The route will connect 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
According to the Railway Ministry, major progress has already been achieved on station and infrastructure development, particularly in Gujarat. Foundation work has been completed at eight stations in the state, including Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
Construction work is currently underway at Thane, Virar and Boisar stations in Maharashtra. Officials also stated that excavation work at the underground Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station in Mumbai is nearing completion.
The ministry highlighted substantial advancement in bridge construction associated with the high-speed corridor. Seventeen river bridges have already been completed as part of the project.
Work is currently progressing on four major bridges in Gujarat across the Narmada, Mahi, Tapti and Sabarmati rivers. In Maharashtra, construction activities are continuing on four additional river bridges linked to the corridor.
The underground BKC station, considered one of the most technically challenging components of the project, has reportedly achieved around 91 per cent excavation completion.
Officials further stated that the 4.8-km under-sea tunnel section between Ghansoli and Shilphata has also been constructed, marking a major engineering achievement for the high-speed rail project.
The MAHSR corridor is being developed under the Centre’s “Make in India” initiative, with indigenous manufacturing playing a key role in the project. Train sets for the corridor are being jointly developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and BEML Limited in Bengaluru.
The proposed train sets are expected to achieve a design speed of up to 280 kilometres per hour, significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier informed Parliament that the entire 1,389.5 hectares of land required for the project has already been acquired in accordance with applicable laws.
The government stated that compensation and rehabilitation measures for affected families were carried out under state laws and the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, along with additional benefits and solatium.
The bullet train project is expected to become a landmark step in India’s transportation modernisation and high-speed rail development.
