US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Visit India for High-Level Talks on Quad, Trade and Security
Washington, May 2026 : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to India from May 23 to May 26 for high-level diplomatic engagements across Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, the US State Department announced on Tuesday.
The visit comes at a critical time as Washington and New Delhi prepare for wide-ranging discussions focused on strengthening the Quad partnership, enhancing energy security, boosting trade relations, and expanding defence cooperation amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East.
Before arriving in India, Rubio will travel to Helsingborg, Sweden, on May 22 to participate in the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting. Following the NATO engagement, he will proceed to India for bilateral and multilateral discussions.
According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, Rubio will hold meetings with senior Indian officials to discuss key areas of cooperation including energy security, trade expansion, and defence collaboration.
In New Delhi, the US Secretary of State is also expected to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The meeting is seen as a key platform for coordinating strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
Experts have described Rubio’s visit as highly significant for recalibrating the US–India strategic partnership. Mukesh Aghi, a leading policy expert, said the timing of the visit is crucial given ongoing global tensions.
He noted that there is a renewed need to strengthen the Quad framework, particularly in light of instability in the Middle East.
Aghi added that discussions are likely to cover maritime security concerns, especially in strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted India’s strong naval presence in the region as an important factor in these conversations.
He further stated that India is expected to seek clarity on recent diplomatic developments involving China and their possible impact on regional stability.
“It is important for Secretary Rubio to brief the Government of India on the China visit because there are implications for India,” Aghi said, adding that New Delhi would closely assess how these developments affect its strategic interests.
According to him, the visit will address multiple fronts of cooperation and challenges, making it an important moment in US–India relations.
In Sweden, Rubio will also participate in discussions on NATO priorities, where he is expected to emphasise the need for increased defence spending and greater burden-sharing among alliance members.
He will additionally meet representatives of the Arctic Seven nations to discuss economic and security cooperation in the Arctic region and the strengthening of strategic presence in the High North.
The State Department said the visit underscores Washington’s commitment to deepening global partnerships and advancing shared security and economic interests with key allies, particularly India.
