Delhi Issues Strict Bakrid Guidelines, Bans Sacrifice of Prohibited Animals and Public Violations
New Delhi, May 2026 : The Delhi government on Friday issued comprehensive guidelines ahead of the upcoming festival of Bakrid, laying down strict rules on animal sacrifice, public hygiene, and designated areas for rituals. Authorities warned that any violation of these directions, particularly involving prohibited animals or sanitation norms, will invite stringent legal action.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra said the instructions have been issued by the Development Department to ensure that the festival is observed in accordance with law, civic discipline, and public safety requirements.
Taking to social media platform X, Mishra clarified that the sacrifice of bovine animals—including cows, calves, camels, and other prohibited species—is strictly illegal in the national capital. He further warned that individuals found engaging in such practices will face criminal prosecution under relevant laws.
“Delhi Government Guidelines on the Occasion of Bakrid: Sacrifice of bovine species, cows, calves, camels, and other prohibited animals on Bakrid is completely illegal, and criminal cases will be registered against those who do so,” Mishra posted.
The minister also emphasised that animal sacrifice will not be permitted in public areas such as roads, streets, or lanes. He stated that enforcement agencies have been instructed to take immediate action against anyone violating these norms. According to the guidelines, sacrifices may only be conducted at officially authorised and designated locations.
“Sacrifice is not permitted at public places, lanes, or roads; legal action will also be taken against those who do so,” he added.
In addition to restrictions on locations and animals, the Delhi government has issued strict instructions regarding waste management during the festival. Citizens have been directed to ensure proper disposal of waste generated after sacrifices, with a specific warning against dumping blood or animal remains into drains, sewers, or any public space.
Officials noted that such practices not only violate sanitation rules but also pose serious environmental and public health risks. The government has stated that violations of waste disposal norms will also attract penal action under applicable laws.
“Dumping waste from sacrifice into sewers, drains, or public places is completely prohibited; sacrifice can only be performed at designated valid sites,” Mishra reiterated.
The minister further appealed to residents to actively report any violations to the police or the Development Department to ensure effective enforcement of the guidelines.
“In case of violation of these guidelines, you can inform the police and the Delhi Government’s Development Ministry,” he said.
Authorities have intensified preparations across the city to ensure proper arrangements for law and order, sanitation, and public health during Bakrid celebrations. The government said the objective is to ensure peaceful observance of the festival while maintaining civic discipline and environmental safety.
