India–Cyprus Ties Set for Boost as PM Modi to Hold Talks with President Christodoulides in New Delhi
New Delhi, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in New Delhi on Friday, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, and regional and global issues.
President Christodoulides arrived in the national capital on Thursday after concluding the Mumbai leg of his India visit. He was received at the airport by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta and was accorded a ceremonial welcome along with a Guard of Honour.
In a statement posted on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “Warm welcome to President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus as he arrives in New Delhi following the Mumbai leg of his visit. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour and was warmly received by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Ajay Tamta.”
The MEA further noted that the visit builds on the momentum created by Prime Minister Modi’s historic trip to Cyprus in June 2025. It said the current visit reflects the shared commitment of both countries to further deepen and diversify the India–Cyprus partnership.
During his stay in New Delhi, President Christodoulides will call on President Droupadi Murmu, who will also host an official banquet in his honour. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet the visiting leader on Friday morning before his formal talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House.
The Cypriot President has described his State Visit to India as “very important,” stating that it represents a key milestone in strengthening the already “excellent” relations between the two countries. His visit comes with a high-level delegation that includes Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, senior government officials, and leading business representatives. The delegation’s presence is expected to further enhance economic and strategic cooperation between the two sides.
Earlier on Thursday, President Christodoulides participated in a symbolic event at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai, where he rang the NSE India bell alongside NSE Chairman Srinivas Injeti and Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan. The gesture highlighted growing financial and investment linkages between India and Cyprus.
Following the ceremony, the Cypriot delegation toured the NSE premises and held detailed discussions with senior leadership of the exchange. The talks focused on expanding financial collaboration and identifying new opportunities for bilateral investment partnerships.
The ongoing visit is expected to add fresh momentum to India–Cyprus relations, particularly in economic engagement, connectivity initiatives, and strategic dialogue in an evolving global landscape.
