Draft Committee Constituted for Policy on Single Women: Minister Meghna Sakore-Bordikar

Mumbai, May 2026: The Maharashtra government will formulate a dedicated “Single Women Policy” aimed at addressing the comprehensive social, economic, educational, health, and legal issues faced by single women in the state, said Minister of State for Women and Child Development Meghna Sakore-Bordikar.

The minister stated that there was a strong need for a separate policy to effectively represent and address the concerns of widowed, deserted, divorced, unmarried women, as well as those single women who independently shoulder household responsibilities. She informed that the Women and Child Development Department has issued a government resolution to this effect and has constituted a draft committee to prepare the policy.

She further said that, as announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his budget speech, a comprehensive survey of single women will be conducted across all districts of the state. Based on the findings of this survey, targeted measures will be formulated to ensure their empowerment and welfare.

The committee comprises senior officials from various government departments, representatives of non-governmental organisations, and officers from the Women and Child Development Department. It will be responsible for making policy recommendations to ensure that single women receive effective benefits from government schemes and for suggesting measures to remove implementation challenges.

“The government is committed to ensuring that single women in the state can live with dignity, receive the full benefits of government welfare schemes, and have their rights protected. This policy will play an important role in their empowerment,” the minister said.

She also informed that the functioning and coordination of the committee will be carried out through the Commissionerate of Women and Child Development, Pune.
