Manipur: NIA Awarded Missing Naga Villagers, Church Leader’s Killing Cases.

Imphal; May 2026: In a major development, the Manipur government on Saturday decided to hand over the case relating to the disappearance of six members of the Naga community to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The decision came after a Six Member delegation of the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body representing Nagas in Manipur, met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and his cabinet colleagues at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the state. The UNC delegation included:

  • President N.G. Lorho,
  • Vice President N. Poujan Golmei,
  • L. Adani Mao,
  • Samson Remmei,
  • Former UNC President K.S. Paul Leo, and
  • A.C. Thotso, member secretary of the Working Committee of the UNC.

The state government was represented by the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and several Naga MLAs. During the meeting, the UNC delegation urged the government to trace the six abducted Naga villagers from Konsakhul village in Kangpokpi district.

According to an official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, the Chief Minister informed the delegation that the case involving the 06 missing villagers would be handed over to the NIA. He also stated that the killing of 03 church leaders in Kangpokpi district on May 13th had already been handed over to the NIA for investigation.

The Chief Minister further said that search and rescue operations have been underway since May 14 to trace the missing villagers. He has  also appealed to the UNC to help secure the release of 14 Kuki civilians who have reportedly been held captive since the violence began.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had appealed to Kuki community organisations to assist in tracing the missing Naga villagers.

Meanwhile, members of the Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) staged a protest outside the official residence of the Chief Minister yesterday (Saturday – 23rd May 2026) demanding his resignation amid heavy security deployment.

The protest took place around noon when MPYCC president W. Anandh Singh, along with several Youth Congress workers, marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence and raised slogans against the state government. During the demonstration, Anandh Singh reportedly knocked on the main gate of the residence and shouted that “a Chief Minister in deep sleep should tender resignation”. The protesters accused the government of failing to effectively address the prevailing situation in the state.

Team Maverick.
