Trump Slams Obama-Era Iran Nuclear Deal, Says New Talks Will Stop Tehran From Getting Nuclear Weapons
Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Sunday strongly defended his administration’s ongoing negotiations with Iran, while sharply criticising the 2015 nuclear agreement signed during the presidency of Barack Obama.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump described the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal as “one of the worst deals ever made” by the United States and claimed it would have allowed Tehran to eventually develop nuclear weapons.
“It was a direct path to Iran developing a Nuclear Weapon,” Trump wrote.
The US President asserted that the current negotiations being conducted by his administration were fundamentally different and aimed at ensuring Iran never acquires nuclear capabilities.
“Not so with the transaction currently being negotiated with Iran by the Trump Administration — THE EXACT OPPOSITE, in fact!” he added.
Trump’s remarks came amid growing diplomatic engagement involving the United States, Iran, and several countries in the Middle East over regional security and Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Earlier, Trump had stated that a broad regional understanding involving Iran and multiple Middle Eastern nations was nearing completion following discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain.
According to Trump, the negotiations were progressing positively and in an organised manner. However, he stressed that his administration would not rush into finalising any agreement.
“The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal, in that time is on our side,” Trump said.
He also indicated that pressure on Iran would continue until a formal agreement was fully completed, approved, and signed by all parties involved.
“The Blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed,” he wrote.
Trump emphasised the need for caution and accuracy during the negotiations, saying both sides needed adequate time to avoid mistakes.
“Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes,” he stated.
Despite decades of strained relations between Washington and Tehran, Trump suggested that communication between the two countries had become more constructive during the current diplomatic process.
“Our relationship with Iran is becoming a much more professional and productive one,” he said.
At the same time, the US President reiterated Washington’s long-standing position that Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon.
“They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or procure a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb,” Trump wrote.
Trump also praised the cooperation shown by Middle Eastern countries involved in the ongoing diplomatic outreach. He linked the current efforts to the broader framework of the Abraham Accords, the US-backed agreements that normalised relations between Israel and several Arab nations during his earlier presidency.
“I would like to thank, thus far, all of the countries of the Middle East for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the nations of the historic Abraham Accords,” he said.
In a notable remark, Trump even floated the possibility of Iran eventually becoming part of the broader regional arrangement if relations continued to improve.
“And, who knows, perhaps the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join, as well!” he wrote.
Trump also revealed that he had spoken separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the ongoing negotiations and regional developments.
According to Trump, discussions with Israel were progressing positively and there was close coordination between Washington and its regional allies on the issue.
The latest statements reflect an intensifying diplomatic push by the United States to address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme while attempting to reshape regional political and security alignments in the Middle East.
