PM Modi Urges Caution as Heatwave Grips India; IMD Forecasts Relief with Pre-Monsoon Rains from May 29

New Delhi, May 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to citizens across the country to remain cautious as several regions continue to reel under intense heatwave conditions. Emphasising both safety and compassion, he urged people to stay hydrated and extend small acts of kindness, such as offering water to those in need during the extreme weather.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when stepping out. Offer a glass of water to others. In weather like this, such kindness goes a long way.”

The advisory comes at a time when large parts of northern India, especially the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), are facing severe heatwave conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature in the region may rise to around 45 degrees Celsius over the next two days, while the minimum temperature is expected to hover near 28 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has issued a clear “heatwave” warning, cautioning residents about the risk of heat-related illnesses due to prolonged exposure. Strong surface winds are also likely during the afternoon and evening hours, further intensifying the harsh weather conditions. Humidity levels on May 27 are expected to fluctuate between 25 per cent and 40 per cent, adding to discomfort in already high temperatures.

Authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, drink sufficient water, wear light clothing, and minimise direct exposure to the sun. Vulnerable groups, including children, elderly people, and those with medical conditions, have been specifically advised to take extra precautions.

However, the weather pattern is expected to begin changing from May 28 onwards. The IMD predicts a slight dip in maximum temperatures to around 43 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may remain close to 29 degrees. Importantly, the department has forecast “thunderstorms with rain” in parts of the region, marking the beginning of a transition phase in weather conditions.

Light to very light rainfall is expected during the afternoon and evening hours on May 28, accompanied by strong winds and squalls reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph. These conditions may bring temporary relief but could also result in localised disruptions due to gusty winds.

A more significant shift is expected on May 29, when temperatures are forecast to drop sharply. The maximum temperature may fall to around 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to settle at 26 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued an alert for thunderstorms accompanied by rain on this day as well. Winds may blow at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, with possibilities of lightning and squall activity in several areas.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue on May 30 and May 31, with forecasts indicating thunderstorms and light rainfall across parts of North India. During this period, maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will likely stay between 25 and 26 degrees. Although no severe warning has been issued for these days, cloudy skies and intermittent rain are expected to persist.

By June 1, weather conditions are likely to stabilise further, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may stay near 27 degrees. Skies are expected to remain partly cloudy, with no major weather warnings in place.

Weather experts have noted that the current pattern of strong winds, dust storms, thunderstorms, lightning, and sporadic rainfall across North, Central, and East India is part of active pre-monsoon conditions typically seen in late May. The rainfall expected around May 29 is also classified as pre-monsoon showers.

Officials said this transitional phase, while initially intense, is likely to bring much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave, offering respite to residents after several days of extreme temperatures.
