Bakrid Celebrated with Devotion and Harmony Across India Amid Tight Security Arrangements

New Delhi, May 2026 : Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, was celebrated with deep religious fervour and enthusiasm across India on Thursday, as thousands of devotees gathered at mosques and Eidgahs since early morning to offer special prayers and mark one of the most significant festivals in Islam.

Large congregations of worshippers were seen at major prayer venues across cities and towns, with people dressed in traditional attire participating in Eid prayers and later exchanging greetings with family members, friends, and neighbours. The festive atmosphere was marked by a strong sense of community spirit, reflection, and gratitude.

Worshippers described the festival as one that carries a powerful message of “brotherhood, communal harmony, and peaceful coexistence,” while also emphasising values of compassion, sacrifice, forgiveness, and charity.

The occasion commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command. Eid al-Adha symbolises unwavering faith, submission to God, and the importance of helping those in need through acts of charity and sharing.

In several parts of the country, families marked the festival by offering special prayers, preparing festive meals, and distributing food to the poor and underprivileged as part of traditional “qurbani” practices. Social organisations and community groups also organised charitable drives to support economically weaker sections.

Security arrangements were significantly strengthened in multiple cities to ensure peaceful celebrations. Authorities deployed additional police forces around major religious sites and sensitive areas to maintain law and order during the festival.

In the national capital, Delhi Police made elaborate security arrangements around the historic Jama Masjid area, where large crowds gathered for the morning prayers. Devotees were allowed entry only after thorough security checks, reflecting heightened precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Across India, Eid prayers were conducted peacefully with coordination between community leaders and local administrations. Officials said there were no major untoward incidents reported during the celebrations.

While most of the country observed Bakrid on Thursday, some regions, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, celebrated it on Wednesday, reflecting regional differences in moon sighting.

The timing of Eid al-Adha is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. This year, religious authorities in several parts of India confirmed that the crescent moon was not sighted on the expected evening, leading to the festival being observed a day later in most states.

Despite the variation in dates, the spirit of the festival remained uniform across the country, with devotees coming together to celebrate faith, compassion, and unity. Bakrid once again reinforced messages of social harmony and collective responsibility, as communities shared joy and extended kindness to those in need.
