Rare Giant Indian Squirrel Spotted in Devpur Forest of Barnawapara

Raipur, May 2026 : The Barnawapara region of Chhattisgarh has once again enhanced the state’s pride with its rich biodiversity. A rare Giant Indian Squirrel (Malabar Giant Squirrel) was spotted in the Devpur forest under the Balodabazar Forest Division during the Devpur Summer Camp 2026. The sighting of this rare wildlife species has generated excitement among forest officials, nature lovers, and scientists.

Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap congratulated the forest department team on this achievement, stating that it reflects the positive outcome of the Chhattisgarh government’s wildlife conservation and environmental protection initiatives. He said the state government is continuously taking effective steps to protect forests and wildlife, which is helping create safe habitats for rare species.

The summer camp was organised by the Balodabazar Forest Division from May 16 to May 22, 2026. During a birding trail held on the first day of the camp (May 16), participants spotted the rare squirrel. The identification was made by nature enthusiast and cyber risk expert Hemant Verma.

The Giant Indian Squirrel, scientifically known as Ratufa indica, is one of the largest tree-dwelling squirrels in India. Its total length, including the tail, can reach up to three feet. The species is known for its striking coat, which features a beautiful mix of dark red, brown, black, and cream colours. It spends most of its life in trees and is capable of making long leaps from one tree to another.

This species is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Hunting or trading in this species is a punishable offence under the law. Officials noted that the presence of this squirrel is an indicator of a healthy forest ecosystem.

Divisional Forest Officer Dhammashil Ganvir stated that the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding forest areas are rich in biodiversity. The sighting of this rare squirrel in the Devpur forest is evidence that the local ecosystem is healthy and well preserved.

He further added that the Devpur Summer Camp provided a unique experience for participating children and youth. The Forest Department believes that witnessing rare wildlife species helps increase awareness among the younger generation about the importance of nature and wildlife conservation.

Officials also highlighted that such initiatives play an important role in strengthening the state government’s environmental protection and public awareness efforts, encouraging greater community participation in conservation activities.
