Ethiopia To Conduct General Elections Today.

Addis Ababa; June 2026: Ethiopia goes to the polls today (Monday – 01st June 2026) in an election which is expected to return Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party to power, but has been marked by instability, restricted voting and questions over whether the vote can challenge the status quo.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced that voting has been barred at 46 constituencies in the conflict-affected regions of Amhara and Tigray, citing instability and political tensions, while further noting that 08 districts in north-western Amhara has “unfavourable conditions” because of clashes between militia groups and the army, while voting has also been suspended in 38 districts in Tigray, where tensions remain high between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

Earlier on the 10th of March this year (2026), the NEBE said that in places “where conditions do not permit polling on June 1, supplementary voting dates will be arranged”.

The election comes as many Ethiopians are focused on everyday issues such as inflation, jobs and security, rather than the campaign. Surprise results are unlikely and opposition figures and analysts say the vote will not offer a genuine challenge to the government.

“The elections in Ethiopia will be a purely formal affair that lends the government electoral legitimacy. There is no way to change or challenge the government through the elections”, according to Kjetil Tronvoll, a peace and conflict researcher at Oslo New University College.

Almost every election since the overthrow of the brutal Derg dictatorship of Haile Mariam Mengistu in 1991 has ended with one party winning 90% to 100% of seats in parliament, often amid allegations of fraud. Netizens has voiced apathy regarding the effectiveness of the elections with citing transparency.

One such citizen in a deep voice of anguishment has asserted that his vote can have a significant impact on politics, while another such person has denied to exercise his electoral rights, while reiterating that the voice of the people has never changed anything, as supposedly not going to change this time either. They even refused to disclose their names for fear of reprisals, in a political climate that has hardened of late.

Vide a press conference on 10th March this year, NEBE Chairperson Birtukan Midekssa had announced the following as the foundation for this edition of the general elections:

  • A total of 11,007 candidates (10,934 candidates from 47 political parties, alongwith 73 independent candidates), have officially registered to compete in the 7th General Election on June 1, 2026.
CategoryNumber of Candidates
House of People’s Representatives2,098
Regional State Councils8,736
Independent candidates (total)73
Total (party + independent)11,007
  • Among the 47 participating political parties, the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) fielded candidates in all constituencies.
  • Ruling Prosperity Party is present in 64 of Ethiopia’s 547 constituencies this time running uncontested. In 2021 it had won 96% of seats.
  • All submitted nominations underwent a screening process to verify that candidates met the legal and constitutional requirements for candidacy, including age, citizenship, and freedom from legal disqualification.
  • Women’s participation among registered candidates reached approximately 30%, which is the highest proportion recorded in any Ethiopian general election to date, which is again attributed to targeted outreach and gender parity incentives introduced in the updated electoral framework.
  • There are some 40 opposition parties, but none are serious contenders. Even the largest, Ezema, will field candidates in less than 60% of seats, hoping to add to its current total of 04 MPs.

Vide an official update on 09th April, NEBE) reported that more than 42 million citizens successfully registered to vote in the 07th General Election scheduled for June 1, 2026. The voter registration campaign ran from March 07th to April 08th, 2026.

For the first time in Ethiopia’s electoral history, citizens were able to register both in person at designated registration centres and digitally through the “Mirchaye” (My Election) mobile application, a significant technological innovation introduced by NEBE to improve accessibility and reach.

Voter registration highlights:

  • Total registered voters: over 42 million
  • Registration period: March 7 – April 8, 2026
  • In-person registration centres: nationwide
  • Digital registration: via Mirchaye mobile app
  • Polling stations planned: 40,000 – 52,720

The Mirchaye application allowed eligible voters to complete the registration process from their smartphones, reducing the need to travel to physical registration points. NEBE reported that digital registrations accounted for a notable proportion of the total, particularly among urban youth voters.

NEBE Chairperson Birtukan Midekssa described the registration turnout as “an encouraging signal of public interest and engagement in the democratic process”. She called on all registered voters to participate peacefully on election day and to report any irregularities to NEBE’s complaint-handling mechanisms.

The board confirmed that the final voter roll would be publicly displayed at each polling station prior to election day, enabling citizens to verify their registration status.

“Conducting elections under these conditions is essentially a ritual intended to show the international community that the government is elected every five years by the people”, Merera Gudina, president of the 11-strong Committee of Opposition Parties, told news reporters.

Results are to be declared on the 11th of June.
