LNG Carrier Bound for India Safely Crosses Strait of Hormuz as Government Ensures Energy Supplies
New Delhi, June 2026 : Amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Malta-flagged LNG carrier DISHA, managed by a consortium led by the Shipping Corporation of India, safely transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) bound for India.
According to an update issued by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the vessel is transporting 62,370 metric tonnes of LNG to Dahej in Gujarat and is expected to reach the Indian port on June 18.
The successful transit of the vessel through one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors comes as global shipping and energy markets continue to closely monitor developments in the Gulf region.
The Ministry said it remains in constant coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, shipping companies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers operating in the region.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), which has been monitoring the situation since the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, has maintained round-the-clock support for Indian maritime personnel and their families.
Over the last 96 hours alone, the DG Shipping control room received 406 calls and 784 emails from seafarers, family members and maritime stakeholders seeking information and assistance.
Since the emergency control room was activated following the Iran conflict, it has handled more than 12,737 calls and over 28,299 emails.
The Ministry further stated that through DG Shipping, the government has facilitated the safe repatriation of over 3,587 Indian seafarers from various locations in the Gulf region so far, including 50 personnel in the past four days.
Officials also reassured that port operations across India remain normal, with no congestion or disruptions reported at any major port.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasised that despite ongoing geopolitical challenges, the government has ensured uninterrupted supplies of essential fuels across the country.
According to the Ministry, domestic consumers continue to receive 100 per cent supply of LPG and piped natural gas (PNG), while compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles is also being supplied without interruption.
For commercial LPG supplies, priority has been accorded to critical sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. Industries including pharmaceuticals, steel, automobiles, agriculture and seed production have also been prioritised to ensure continuity of operations.
To support vulnerable groups such as migrant workers and students, the government has increased the supply of small 5-kg LPG cylinders.
The government has also implemented several supply and demand management measures to maintain energy security. These include increasing refinery production, extending LPG refill booking intervals from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions, while prioritising key sectors for fuel distribution.
Officials said these measures are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies and safeguarding the interests of consumers amid uncertain global conditions.
