Mamata Banerjee moves Calcutta High Court challenging Bhabanipur Assembly election result
Kolkata, June 2026 : Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday approached the Calcutta High Court, challenging the results of the 2026 Assembly election from the Bhabanipur constituency, where she was defeated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Banerjee made an unexpected visit to the court in the afternoon and filed an election petition contesting the outcome of the Bhabanipur seat. The move marks the second time the Trinamool Congress supremo has personally approached the High Court following her party’s defeat in the recent Assembly elections.
According to sources, Banerjee filed an affidavit as part of her election petition seeking judicial scrutiny of the Bhabanipur poll results. While details of the petition have not been made public, the filing formally initiates legal proceedings challenging the election outcome.
The Trinamool leader was accompanied by party MLA Kunal Ghosh and senior leader Dola Sen during her brief visit to the court premises. She left shortly after completing the filing process.
Her sudden appearance at the High Court generated curiosity among lawyers and visitors present at the premises. Later, one of her legal representatives confirmed that the petition pertained to the Bhabanipur Assembly election.
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Banerjee suffered a high-profile defeat to Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur, with Adhikari winning the constituency by a margin of more than 15,000 votes. The victory paved the way for him to become the new Chief Minister of the state, marking a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape.
This is not the first time Banerjee has sought legal recourse over an electoral defeat. In the 2021 Assembly elections, she had lost to Suvendu Adhikari in the Nandigram constituency and subsequently filed an election petition challenging that result as well.
The Nandigram case, which has been pending before the courts for several years, remains unresolved. By moving the High Court once again, Banerjee has signalled her intent to contest the outcome of another crucial electoral battle against her former party colleague turned political rival.
Earlier, on May 14, Banerjee had personally appeared before the High Court in connection with a case related to post-poll violence. During that visit, she reportedly faced protests from a section of lawyers who raised slogans against her.
The latest petition adds a fresh legal dimension to West Bengal’s evolving political landscape, with the outcome likely to attract significant attention given the high-profile nature of the contest and the leaders involved.
