England Edge Past Ireland by Four Wickets to Maintain Unbeaten Start in Women’s T20 World Cup

Southampton, June 2026 : Hosts England continued their winning run in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, overcoming a spirited Ireland challenge to register a hard-fought four-wicket victory in a Group 2 encounter at Southampton on Wednesday.

Despite being favourites heading into the match, England were made to work hard by a determined Irish side before eventually chasing down the target with 15 balls to spare and securing their second successive win of the tournament.

Brief Scores:

Ireland Women: 118/9 in 20 overs
(Louise Little 26; Sophie Ecclestone 3 wickets)

England Women: 119/6 in 17.3 overs
(Nat Sciver-Brunt 48)

Result: England Women won by 4 wickets.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, England delivered a disciplined performance with the ball to restrict Ireland to a modest total of 118/9. The hosts maintained tight lines and lengths throughout the innings, preventing Ireland from building momentum or forging substantial partnerships.

Ireland struggled to accelerate as wickets fell at regular intervals. While several batters got starts, none managed to convert them into a significant score. Louise Little emerged as the top scorer with 26 runs, providing some resistance amid England’s relentless bowling attack.

Star spinner Sophie Ecclestone was the standout performer for England, claiming three wickets and once again underlining her importance to the side. England’s pace and spin departments complemented each other effectively, ensuring Ireland never gained control of the innings.

A late push from Ireland’s lower middle order helped them cross the 100-run mark and post 118/9, giving their bowlers a target to defend and a chance to challenge the hosts.

England’s chase, however, was anything but comfortable. Ireland’s bowlers struck early and kept the pressure on throughout, ensuring the contest remained alive deep into the second innings.

The hosts lost wickets at crucial stages and found it difficult to dominate against Ireland’s disciplined attack. England’s batters were forced to rebuild repeatedly as Ireland continued to chip away with timely breakthroughs.

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt once again rose to the occasion, anchoring the innings with a composed knock of 48. Her innings proved decisive as she steadied the chase following early setbacks and ensured England remained on course despite the mounting pressure.

With the required run rate under control, England’s middle order played sensibly in the latter stages, rotating the strike and minimizing risks. Although Ireland continued to fight back with wickets, the target ultimately proved insufficient as England crossed the finish line with four wickets in hand.

The victory strengthens England’s position in Group 2 and preserves their unbeaten record in the tournament. With back-to-back wins, the hosts have further enhanced their credentials as one of the leading contenders for the title.

For Ireland, despite ending on the losing side, the performance offered several positives. Their disciplined bowling and fighting spirit against one of the tournament favourites demonstrated that they are capable of competing with the best teams on the world stage.

As the tournament progresses, England will look to build on their momentum, while Ireland will aim to turn encouraging performances into victories in the matches ahead.
