G7 Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine, Welcome US-Iran Deal and Stress Indo-Pacific Stability
Evian, June 2026 : Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations on Wednesday issued a wide-ranging joint statement addressing major geopolitical challenges, reaffirming support for Ukraine, welcoming a breakthrough agreement between the United States and Iran, and underscoring the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The statement reflected the group’s efforts to address global security concerns amid ongoing conflicts and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
On the war in Ukraine, the G7 leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting Kyiv in its defence against Russia. The statement emphasized the group’s united stance in backing Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
“We stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the leaders said.
The G7 pledged to strengthen military assistance to Ukraine by providing additional air defence systems, interceptors, and long-range capabilities. The leaders also expressed readiness to support increased defence production within Ukraine, including through licensing arrangements aimed at boosting the country’s military capabilities.
The group indicated that it was prepared to intensify pressure on Russia through tougher sanctions, particularly targeting Moscow’s oil and gas sectors. According to the statement, leaders believe that recent developments have created “new momentum” in the conflict, making it an appropriate time to consider additional measures.
The statement also referred to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic efforts supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that the development had contributed to stabilizing regional dynamics.
Turning to the Middle East, the G7 welcomed the newly announced agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant opportunity to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons while addressing broader regional security concerns.
The leaders reiterated their long-standing position that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons and expressed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
According to the statement, the agreement provides “an historic opportunity” to tackle issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme as well as concerns surrounding its regional and ballistic missile activities.
The G7 also endorsed initiatives led by France and the United Kingdom to restore confidence in maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and facilitate the resumption of commercial shipping. The leaders stressed that unrestricted maritime transit remains essential to global trade and economic stability.
On regional conflicts in the Middle East, the group called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and backed efforts to disarm Hezbollah. Regarding Gaza, the leaders pledged to accelerate humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts while urging an end to violence in the West Bank.
The Indo-Pacific region also featured prominently in the statement. The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to a rules-based international order and opposed any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo through force or coercion.
The leaders specifically expressed concern over tensions in the East and South China Seas and across the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing that disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy.
The statement further highlighted concerns regarding North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. The G7 reiterated its commitment to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
In addition, the leaders called for coordinated international efforts to combat North Korean cyber activities, including cryptocurrency theft and other forms of cybercrime that have become an increasing source of concern.
Concluding their statement, the G7 leaders voiced support for international initiatives aimed at addressing global economic imbalances. They also welcomed China’s participation in the Global Convergence for Growth Summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month, signalling continued engagement on global economic challenges.
The joint declaration underscores the G7’s attempt to present a unified front on major international issues, ranging from regional conflicts and nuclear proliferation to economic cooperation and maritime security.
