Cape Verde’s Heroic Debut Stuns Spain as Veteran Goalkeeper Vozinha Shines in Historic World Cup Draw

The undisputed hero of the night was 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose inspired display earned him the Player of the Match award. The veteran custodian made seven crucial saves to deny a star-studded Spanish attack and help his side secure a historic point in their World Cup debut.

Cape Verde’s achievement becomes even more remarkable considering that the country is the third-smallest nation by population ever to compete in a FIFA World Cup. Yet, against one of the tournament favourites, they displayed resilience, organization and belief far beyond expectations.

Spain dominated possession and created numerous opportunities but simply could not find a way past the brilliant Vozinha. The European giants attempted 27 shots during the match without scoring—equalling their highest number of shots in a World Cup game without finding the net. The previous instance came in 1998 against Paraguay, a match that also ended in a 0-0 draw.

Vozinha was at his best throughout the contest. In the first half alone, he produced three outstanding saves within a span of six minutes. He denied Mikel Oyarzabal’s dangerous header, smothered Ferran Torres’ close-range effort and kept out Aymeric Laporte’s powerful header. Later in the game, he also thwarted attempts from Mikel Merino and Marc Cucurella inside the penalty area.

However, the night carried deep personal emotions for the veteran goalkeeper. Speaking after the match, Vozinha revealed that his family was unable to witness the historic occasion in person due to visa issues.

The goalkeeper admitted that he broke down in tears after the match, remembering his late grandparents who raised him during childhood.

“I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents, and they could not be here. They passed away a few years ago. My mother also couldn’t come because of visa problems and the financial costs involved. We couldn’t arrange everything in time,” he said.

Despite the personal disappointment, Vozinha expressed immense pride in representing his nation and thanked supporters back home in Cape Verde.

“This is a message of gratitude to everyone in Cape Verde. We are very happy after this result. This group of players has worked extremely hard to live this moment. It is a day of pride and satisfaction,” he added.

The historic performance also saw Vozinha become the oldest player ever to feature in his country’s World Cup debut match at the age of 40 years and 12 days.

Cape Verde’s defense received another major boost from Shamrock Rovers defender Pico Lopes, who made a decisive block in the 88th minute to deny Oyarzabal what looked like a certain winning goal.

Despite spending much of the match defending, Cape Verde also had moments of promise in attack. Dini Borges came close to creating history, but his effort was saved by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Spain, meanwhile, will be concerned by their inability to convert chances. Ferran Torres struck the post from six yards in the first half, while even the introduction of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal failed to unlock Cape Verde’s stubborn defense. Spain registered 12 shots in the opening half alone but could not capitalize.

The result extends Spain’s winless run in FIFA World Cup matches to four games, their longest such streak since the 1982–1986 period. Although the 2010 world champions earned a point, questions remain about their finishing ahead of their next group-stage match against Saudi Arabia on June 21.

For Cape Verde, however, the draw already feels like a victory. Against all odds, the tournament newcomers announced their arrival on football’s grandest stage with courage, determination and a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
