West Indies Survive Scotland Scare to Secure Thrilling Seven-Run Victory in Women’s T20 World Cup

Leeds, June 2026 : The West Indies held their nerve in a tense finish to register a hard-fought seven-run victory over Scotland in a gripping Group B encounter of the Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley on Friday (IST). The Caribbean side, led by a sensational late cameo from veteran all-rounder Stafanie Taylor, overcame a spirited Scottish challenge to record their second win of the tournament.

After posting a competitive 153/6 in their allotted 20 overs, the West Indies appeared to have one hand on the contest. However, Scotland responded with determination and came close to pulling off a memorable upset before eventually finishing on 146/9, falling just seven runs short.

Having been asked to bat first, the West Indies found scoring difficult against a disciplined Scottish bowling attack that kept the pressure on throughout the early stages. The Caribbean batters struggled to find boundaries, managing only four fours during the powerplay as they reached a modest 33/1 after six overs.

Scotland’s bowlers maintained tight lines and lengths, preventing the West Indies from building momentum. Katherine Fraser emerged as the standout performer with the ball, claiming two wickets and also contributing in the field with a run-out and a spectacular boundary catch that dismissed opener Qiana Joseph.

Captain Hayley Matthews failed to make a significant impact and was bowled for 14 from 22 deliveries, leaving her side under pressure. At the halfway stage, the former champions were crawling at 59/2, with Scotland firmly in control of the contest.

Shemaine Campbelle attempted to stabilize the innings and played a crucial knock of 36 off 26 balls. Alongside the experienced Deandra Dottin, who was playing her 150th T20 International, Campbelle helped rebuild the innings with a valuable partnership. However, regular wickets continued to hamper the West Indies’ progress.

When Chinelle Henry departed, the scoreboard read a worrying 85/5 in the 15th over, and a total around 130 seemed likely. That was when veteran Stafanie Taylor produced a game-changing innings.

Using her experience and impeccable timing, Taylor accelerated brilliantly during the closing overs. She found gaps with ease and punished loose deliveries, helping West Indies collect 29 runs from the final two overs. Her unbeaten 47 off just 19 balls, featuring several powerful boundaries, transformed the innings and pushed the total to an imposing 153/6.

Scotland’s chase began in spectacular fashion. Openers Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser attacked confidently, bringing up a half-century partnership within five overs and putting the West Indies bowlers under considerable pressure.

The match, however, turned dramatically in the sixth over when Matthews struck twice. She first dismissed Fraser for 20 and then removed Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce just two deliveries later. The breakthroughs triggered a dramatic collapse as Scotland slumped from 51 without loss to 55/4 in the space of just 13 deliveries.

Despite the setback, Darcey Carter refused to surrender. Battling through a calf injury, she anchored the chase with a determined 59 from 62 balls. Her resilience kept Scotland’s hopes alive as she stitched together a vital 58-run partnership with Ailsa Lister for the sixth wicket.

Lister also played an impressive supporting role, contributing 33 runs and helping Scotland edge closer to the target. With the required rate climbing, the contest remained finely balanced heading into the final overs.

Just when Scotland appeared capable of producing a stunning upset, Aaliyah Alleyne delivered a decisive spell. In a brilliant penultimate over, she removed Carter, Lister and Kirstie Gordon, effectively ending Scotland’s challenge.

Although Scotland continued to fight until the final ball, the damage had been done. The West Indies eventually closed out a tense encounter by seven runs to strengthen their position in Group B.

Brief Scores: West Indies 153/6 in 20 overs (Stafanie Taylor 47* off 19, Shemaine Campbelle 36; Katherine Fraser 2/34) beat Scotland 146/9 in 20 overs (Darcey Carter 59, Ailsa Lister 33; Aaliyah Alleyne 3/11, Hayley Matthews 3/19) by 7 runs.
