World Cup Quarterfinals Put 17 Players at Risk of Suspension Ahead of Semifinals

New York, July 2026 : As the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters the quarterfinal stage, disciplinary concerns have emerged as a major talking point, with 17 players standing just one yellow card away from suspension. Several tournament favourites could be forced to cope without key stars in the semifinals if these players are booked in their upcoming matches.

Under FIFA regulations, yellow cards accumulated during the group stage were cleared before the knockout rounds began. However, players who receive two yellow cards between the Round of 32 and the quarterfinals will automatically miss the semifinal should their team progress.

England and Morocco face the biggest selection headaches heading into the last-eight clashes.

Morocco have four players walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of their quarterfinal against France. Defenders Issa Diop and Achraf Hakimi, along with Redouane Halhal and midfielder Bilal El Khannouss, are all one booking away from suspension. Losing any of these players would be a significant setback if Morocco advances to the final four.

France also have important players at risk. Forward Michael Olise and midfielder Manu Kone will have to tread carefully against Morocco, as another yellow card would rule them out of a potential semifinal.

England, however, could suffer the biggest blow. Four of manager Harry Brook’s key players—midfielder Jude Bellingham, defender Marc Guehi, holding midfielder Declan Rice, and left-back Nico O’Reilly—are all one caution away from missing the semifinals. Their availability could prove crucial as England looks to continue its World Cup campaign.

Jordan Henderson had also entered the knockout stage carrying a yellow card but is no longer a suspension concern after being ruled out of the tournament with a broken wrist. Norway winger Antonio Nusa is another player who must avoid a booking if his side is to retain its strongest lineup for a possible semifinal.

Switzerland are also facing disciplinary concerns, with captain Granit Xhaka, midfielder Denis Zakaria and defender Miro Muheim all one yellow card away from suspension. Any further caution could significantly weaken the Swiss side if they reach the next stage.

In Friday’s quarterfinal between Spain and Belgium, Spain forward Ferran Torres and Belgium defender Brandon Mechele are the only players from their respective teams at immediate risk of suspension. Torres has impressed as an impact substitute during Spain’s knockout campaign, making his availability particularly important.

Argentina have comparatively fewer worries, with defender Gonzalo Montiel the only member of Lionel Scaloni’s squad facing a possible suspension after another booking.

The tournament has also highlighted differences in disciplinary records among the remaining teams. Argentina have maintained one of the cleanest records, receiving just one yellow card for every 19.7 fouls committed. England, in contrast, have been booked far more frequently, averaging one yellow card for every 7.7 fouls.

With places in the semifinals at stake, players and coaches will need to carefully balance aggressive play with discipline. A single mistimed challenge or unnecessary booking could leave some of the tournament’s biggest stars watching the semifinals from the sidelines, making discipline as crucial as performance in the race for World Cup glory.
