Fadnavis Steps In to Ensure Stability, Takes Charge of State Budget After Ajit Pawar’s Passing

Nagpur, Jan 2026 : In the aftermath of the sudden demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday took decisive steps to ensure administrative continuity and political stability in the state. Addressing concerns arising from the unexpected leadership vacuum, Fadnavis announced that he would personally oversee the preparation of the 2026–27 State Budget, a responsibility that Ajit Pawar had been handling as Finance Minister.

Ajit Pawar’s passing has not only left an emotional void in Maharashtra’s political landscape but has also raised questions about key governance processes, particularly the upcoming budget session. Responding to these concerns, Fadnavis clarified that Pawar had already completed substantial groundwork for the next financial year.

“Ajit Dada had done extensive preparation for the budget. To ensure that his vision and planning are carried forward seamlessly, I will personally take charge of the remaining work starting tomorrow,” the Chief Minister said.

Fadnavis emphasised that the state government is committed to honouring Ajit Pawar’s efforts and ensuring that there is no disruption in financial planning or governance. He added that while he would supervise the remaining stages of budget preparation, a final decision on who will present the budget in the legislature will be taken at an appropriate time.

“The preparations are largely complete. I will oversee the remaining processes, and later we will decide who will present the budget in the Assembly,” Fadnavis stated.

The Chief Minister also sought to reassure the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Ajit Pawar’s family, underlining the ruling alliance’s solidarity during this difficult period. He affirmed that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state government stand firmly with the NCP and the Pawar family.

“Whatever decision the NCP takes regarding its leadership or the family, the BJP and the state government will stand with full force behind them,” Fadnavis said, stressing the importance of unity within the MahaYuti alliance. His remarks were aimed at reinforcing confidence and stability within the coalition at a time of political uncertainty.

When questioned about whether a formal proposal regarding the vacant Deputy Chief Minister’s post had been received, Fadnavis confirmed that discussions are ongoing but refrained from commenting on specifics.

“NCP leaders have met me twice to discuss their internal procedures and possible options. However, the final decision lies entirely with the party. It would not be appropriate for me to comment further until they finalise their stand,” he noted.

In addition to addressing the leadership transition and budgetary matters, Fadnavis also touched upon the pending mayoral elections in major cities, including Mumbai and Nagpur. He said that consultations within the MahaYuti alliance are underway and that decisions regarding candidates will be taken in the coming days.

“These decisions will be made after detailed discussions with local party leaders and legislators,” he said.

Fadnavis’s statements and actions signal the government’s intent to maintain continuity, stability, and cooperative decision-making during a sensitive transition period for Maharashtra politics.
