Budget 2026–27 Sets the Game Plan to Make India a Global Sports Goods Hub

Feb 2026 : The Union Budget 2026–27 has laid out an ambitious roadmap to transform India into a global hub for high-quality, affordable sports goods, while simultaneously strengthening the country’s overall sports ecosystem. Presenting the Budget in Parliament, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of a dedicated national initiative for sports goods, aimed at unlocking India’s vast manufacturing potential and growing global demand for sports equipment.

This initiative is closely aligned with the first of the three Kartavyas that guide this year’s Budget — accelerating and sustaining economic growth by enhancing productivity, competitiveness, and resilience in a volatile global environment. By focusing on sports goods manufacturing, the government seeks to tap into a fast-growing global market while creating jobs and boosting exports from India.

The proposed initiative will promote manufacturing, research, and innovation across the sports goods value chain. Special emphasis will be placed on advanced equipment design and material sciences, helping Indian manufacturers move up the value ladder. With India already home to several sports goods clusters, this policy push is expected to modernize production capabilities, encourage technology adoption, and improve quality standards to compete globally.

In another major announcement, the Finance Minister unveiled the Khelo India Mission, a long-term programme aimed at transforming the sports sector over the next decade. Highlighting the employment potential of sports, Sitharaman said the sector offers multiple avenues for jobs, skill development, and entrepreneurship. The Mission builds on the foundation laid by the Khelo India programme and directly supports the second Kartavya of the Budget — fulfilling people’s aspirations and building their capacity to become strong partners in India’s growth story.

The Khelo India Mission will introduce an integrated and structured talent development pathway, starting from the grassroots to elite levels. Training centres will be developed at foundational, intermediate, and high-performance stages to identify and nurture sporting talent across the country. The Mission also emphasizes the systematic development of coaches and support staff, ensuring a strong backbone for athlete training.

A key feature of the Mission is the integration of sports science and modern technology, helping athletes improve performance, prevent injuries, and compete at international standards. Regular competitions and leagues will be promoted to build a vibrant sports culture and provide consistent platforms for talent exposure. Additionally, focused investment in sports infrastructure will support training and competitive events nationwide.

Together, the sports goods initiative and the Khelo India Mission reflect a clear intent to position sports as both an economic growth driver and a tool for social empowerment, making Budget 2026–27 a significant step forward for India’s sporting future.
